Because we all enjoy oppressive heat, there will be no wind in the central Gorge today. That will be perfect weather to complement the oil trail protest rally happening in downtown Hood River (2nd n’ State) at noon. In case you haven’t heard, an oil train derailed in Mosier yesterday. Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

As for your wind forecast, you can expect 25-30 pretty much all day at Rooster Rock with the Stevenson area getting 15-18 early, 21-25 midday, and 15-18 in the afternoon. The wind will fade the further east you go, maxing out this afternoon at E 4-7 from Viento eastward to Arlington. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Sunday starts off with light east wind, and picks up to 12-15 or a touch more from Rooster to Stevenson late morning. The wind will back off to nothing-at-all by mid-afternoon, picking up out of the west just enough to ruffle the river, perhaps 5-10, late in the afternoon or early in the evening.

Models are still bouncing all over the place for the wind Monday through Wednesday. As of this morning, it’s looking like we’ll see 17-20 or a bit more on Monday (hey, what happened to my nuking Dawn Patrol???), 28-32 on Tuesday, and 28-32 on Wednesday. That said, previous model runs showed us having high pressure offshore on Tuesday and Wednesday, and today’s model runs show us having a weak upper level low offshore on Tuesday and Wednesday. This, my friends, is why you can’t trust the long-range forecasts.

Finally, I’ll just keep reminding you of this one: CGWA has a bunch of contests happening this summer – photo, Strava, and video. Get more information about those contests right here.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

No, I don’t feel like forecasting snow today, but be aware that the Hood 2 River Relay is today.

Random Morning Thoughts

As many of you know, an oil train derailed in Mosier last night. Thankfully the town is safe. Things could have been much worse.

I tend to stand on the sidelines when political issues arise. This, however, is no political issue. Oil trains running through the Gorge are both a safety issue and a health issue, as you well know if you had the pleasure of breathing that black smoke last night or being evacuated from yoru home. Oil trains have the potential to pollute our air, pollute our water, impact our fisheries, destroy our beaches, hurt our towns (btw, the train just missed Mosier’s sewage treatment plant), etc., etc., etc. Think this isn’t serious? Ask the kids who were evacuated from the Mosier School yesterday and the families who were evacuated from Mosier Manor Trailer Park.

Rail companies are asking to be allowed to run more oil (and coal) trains through the Gorge. This is not acceptable to me. The risks are too high. If you also feel this way, you can join local residents for a protest rally at noon at the fountain on 2nd and State Street today. If you’d like to make a sign to carry at the rally, Columbia Riverkeeper’s office at 205 Oak will be open starting at 10:30.

One other point – today’s forecast is 98 degrees. We will likely set a record high today (old record is 96). Tomorrow’s forecast high is 100, and would be the earliest 100 degree day on record by two weeks. Our use of fossil fuels is warming our planet. Sorry, climate change deniers, but this is the truth, and not up for debate. While we can’t stop using fossil fuels today, we can take a serious look at our use, and we can see the connection between a derailed oil train in Mosier and the oppressive heat we’ll feel for the next two days. See you at the rally. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 716 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a beautiful, sunny day with a few high clouds and just a trace of unhealthy smoke in the air from smoldering oil train cars in Mosier. Expect high clouds to increase in the afternoon with a chance of thunderclouds (but there really isn’t much moisture in the air, so maybe not). Temps will be in the upper 50’s this morning (well, it was 58 when I got up and it’s 62 as I type this) and near 100 in the afternoon. The old record high is 96. Goodbye old record high. Light east wind. No rainbows, except in the sprinklers. Sunday starts off with a few high clouds and plenty of sun. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and right around 100 in the afternoon. That’ll be a record, for sure. Light wind. No rainbows. Monday looks sunny with temps in the mid 60’s early and the low 90’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Your best chance to get in a ride without sweltering is early this morning either on the trails or on the road. As of last night, the Twin Tunnels trail was closed. I’m not sure if it has reopened, but I did hear that they were allowing Mosier residents to evacuate by car via the Twin Tunnels yesterday afternoon, which is the only cool thing that happened from this nasty oil train derailment. In other bike news, Hood River County still has a work party planned for today at Binn’s Hill Staging Area at 9am. Hot. Damn hot. Whoopdee trail is basically closed at this point due to logging, and as you all (should) know by now, no dogs are allowed on Hospital Hill until the cattle are gone.

Upcoming Events

Looking at today’s events, there’s a 8am trail run in Post Canyon, and a 9am trail work party at Binn’s Hill Staging Area. but today’s big event is the Hood 2 River Relay from Mt. Hood Meadows to Hood River. If you’re doing it, stay hydrated. Tomorrow’s race is the White Salmon Springfest run and walk. Springfest, by the way, is happening all weekend long in White Salmon.

Other events tomorrow include three free yoga classes – 9am at Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River. There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 10 tomorrow and pickup Ultimate Frisbee at 5 at Westside Elementary.

Have an awesome day today!
