Outfound Series Festival – Hood River
OutFound is a 3-day adventure sports and outdoor innovation festival taking place on June 9-11th on The Event Site. The activities include a speaker series, a startup competition for outdoor driven brands, an expo, hands-on workshops, creatives games and art, outdoor activities and sports on site, networking hours, outdoor films and music performances.
OutFound’s goal is to bring outdoor enthusiasts and innovators together for 3 days of experiential activities. It’s about learning new skills, meeting inspiring leaders and engaging in unforgettable outdoor focused experiences. Outdoor innovation is about out of the box thinking and this mixture of activities encourages that. We believe that getting adventure enthusiasts and leaders together in a creative setting will be a catalyst for exciting new ideas, projects and businesses in the outdoor space.
Gorge Wind Forecast
If you look outside this morning, there’s no sign of what’s to come over the next couple of days. It’s just a sunny, moderately windy morning with gradients of .06 from Portland to The Dalles. So let’s just ignore the gradients like we do most days. River flow is 425kcfs and river temp is holding steady at 57 degrees. The GFS has the wind holding steady at 10-13 through the Gorge until mid-afternoon as a low pressure system takes its time moving east to the south of us. The GFS then takes us to 20-23 in the evening and strong overnight. I’m not buying that timing, given the fact that while I was writing this forecast, the wind jumped from 10-13 to 15-18 through the whole Gorge. It looks like the low pressure system forecast to move inland during the day is moving earlier than expected, which leaves the forecast as complete guesswork. How about a steady build to 24-27 this afternoon from Swell to Arlington? Ok. There’s my guess!
No matter the timing, Monday morning starts off windy as strong offshore high pressure combines with a deep low in the great basin and a capped atmosphere that pushes the wind down to the Cascade gaps. The big question will be how far inland the deep (7000′-9000′!) marine layer makes it. Gut instinct suggests it’ll make it past Hood River, setting up Dawn Patrol at 26-30 from Mosier to Arlington. Bring those garbage cans inside early, because the wind will pick up to 35-40 from Mosier to Boardman after noon. Again, the Hood River area is a big maybe. If the clouds burn back, we’ll see 30+ at Swell and Hood River too. Stevenson is going to stay cloudy and gusty on Monday, with 17-20 or so (that’s really just guesswork).

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.
Tuesday brings a slightly less deep marine layer and slightly less perfect setup for wind. It’ll still be good, just not as perfect as Monday. Once again, the depth and penetration of the marine layer will determine where the wind starts and ends. We’ll see 24-28 from Mosier eastward to start the day with 28-32 from Mosier to Arlington in the afternoon. Slightly stronger wind is quite possible for periods of time from Rowena to Rufus. Just in case you haven’t caught on, the current is wicked strong at the Rufus section of the river. Keep that in mind if you are planning on going there.
Things settle down a bit on Wednesday as a weather system starts to approach the coast. As of right now, we’re looking at 10-13 to start the day with gusty 20-23 in the afternoon. Thursday starts out light and sees an afternoon burst of upper teens or low 20’s ahead of incoming rain.

Random Morning Thoughts
When we’re trying to figure things out in our lives, we often ask the wrong question. An entire book could be written on this, but I want to talk about one specific piece today: the closed-ended question. If you’re struggling with something and are asking yourself a yes/no, right/wrong question, you are asking a question that is too simple for life, which happens to be complicated.
Let’s make this concrete. The question you’re asking might be, “Should I go back to school?” You could get stuck in this for months, because the “yes” and “no” answers both have merit. Open-ended questions will give you more mental flexibility: “What are the advantages of going back to school?” for example, will allow you to see both roads more clearly. You may even find you’ve been asking the wrong question!
What’s that mean? Well, often we ask questions that limit our options. The right question in this case might have been, “What are some possible options for my future?” or “What things are impacting me now that I am considering making a drastic change to my life?”
It’s not just the yes/no questions that limit us. It’s also questions that pigeon-hole us before we have a chance to see the bigger picture. Notice the questions you’re asking yourself. Consider making them bigger and more open before you settle on an answer. Have an awesome day.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
I betcha the dirt is amazing in Post Canyon right now and also on the 44 Road trails after they received a bunch of rain yesterday. I took a quick lap in The Land of Ticks (Hospital Hill) yesterday, and it looks like the Kreps are rounding up the cattle. They’re not done yet, but soon, soon, you will be able to take your dog for a ride there to pick up ticks and poison oak.
Upcoming Events
Today’s events include the final day of the Outfound Festival at Hood River’s Event Site. There’s a work party on White Salmon’s Weldon Wagon Trail at 9 this morning, and there’s a ping pong clinic at the Hood River Armory at 10 this morning followed by a couple hours of open play at 10:30.
We also have three free yoga classes today: 9am at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga Hood River.
Next Saturday looks really busy, with the Whtie Salmon Backyard Half Marathon, the Summer Solstace 50k, the A-Town throwdown windsports contest in Arlington, and opening day of Sailboat season in Cascade Locks.
Have an awesome day today!
