Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning! You probably noticed that the website was down for a couple of days. That was because I forgot to pay the bill. But it’s a good reminder that this forecast and this website have costs. And it takes me over an hour each day to put together this forecast. Please take the time to make a donation above. If you’re here, this is important to you. Without your support, it can’t keep going. It’s only here because of the generosity of those who support it. So please, before you read the forecast, scroll back up and shoot me a contribution via paypal (twomirrors@gmail.com) or Venmo (@thegorgeismygym). You can also send check or cash via USPS: Temira @ PO Box 841, Hood River, OR 97031. Thank you for your support!

Today might just be the windsport rest day you’ve been looking for. Maybe. If you have lighter-wind gear, you’ll be out on the river again this afternoon. Make sure you find a rest day in there somewhere, because most of next week and next weekend are likely to be windy.

Sunday kicks off with pressures of 30.00/29.95/29.95 for gradients of 0.05 and 0.00. Stay close to home base today! Westerlies hold in the calm-to-light range until late morning or early afternoon. By 2pm or so, they should be 12-15ish from Stevenson to Swell or Hood River. The wind builds to 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier with 14-17 from Lyle to Doug’s late in the afternoon. River flow yesterday was 151-173kcfs, river temp is 63F, and high temp forecast is 83F.

Monday kicks off with 15-18 from Stevenson to Hood River. Increasing onshore flow on the west side in the afternoon holds down the temps. Meanwhile, hot weather in the desert creates a heat low. This takes the wind to 20-23 (Stevenson to Mosier) midday and ramps it up to 24-27+ from Lyle to Rufus in mid-afternoon. Stevenson will likely hold in he low 20’s, but Viento to Mosier should drop to the upper teens. High temp: 87F.

Tuesday starts with deep marine clouds in Portland. Cool air offshore reinforces the chill during the day. Out in the desert: heat. Offshore: high pressure. Dawn Patrol arrives with 27-31 from Viento to Arlington. The wind builds to 30+ all the way from Stevenson (okay, maybe 26-29 there) to Threemile. Locations between Rowena and Arlington may see 35+ in the afternoon. Take all your small gear with you. High temp: 76F. Wednesday won’t be nuking, but it’ll be windy: upper 20’s, probably east of Mosier. Lesser wind is forecast on Thursday (upper teens) and is followed by mid 20’s or so Friday. Speaking of Friday, there’s some disagreement on the strength of an incoming system that will impact us Friday through the weekend. The weather will be cooler, windy, and you are likely to be driving east of Hood River for your river session. In other words, this 7 day stretch looks great! Enjoy!

Cycling

How much rain do you need to make brown pow out of dust? Somewhere between 0.1” and 0.25”. Maybe next weekend! Post is clear of snow to the top. Dog River and Surveyor’s are clear. Bottle Prairie, 8 Mile, and Super Connector are open and already dusty. Super Duper Connector is open. There is still snow on a short section of Surveyor’s between the Cooks Meadow intersection and Dog River. Nestor Peak is clear of snow. The USFS website says that Lewis River is open and clear. Falls Creek isn’t even close! The Forest Loop above Trout Lake is reportedly open. Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: I was wandering around my garden yesterday and notice there’s some tomato pruning that needs to happen. That inspired me to ask ChatGPT, “How do I grow giant tomato plants?” The AI says: fertilize regularly, prune the lowest leaves (to prevent disease), put plants at least two feet apart, water deeply and infrequently, and mulch to prevent spores in the ground from getting to your plants and also to keep the soil moist. Lastly, use companion plants such as dill, marigolds, nasturtiums, sweet alyssum, and others. Plants like company too.
