Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s a fine start to the day on Mt. Hood – half a foot of snow has fallen, and quite a bit more is on the way. Add in some wind for free refills! Snowfall continues through Monday afternoon, and then we move into a period of dry, frigid weather for a couple of days. Models for next weekend are trending drier, but there’s still some hope. Vote for the GFS instead of the ECMWF…

Sunday will be snowy and windy all day long. It’s about time! The snow level will be 2500-3000′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. About 0.7” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day. That gives us 7-8” increasingly dry snow (it’s pretty heavy this morning). Overnight, another 0.2”-0.3” is forecast for 2-3” powder. Wind: NW 30-40 in the morning, NW 20-30 in the afternoon, and NW 15-20 overnight.

Easterly orographic snowfall continues on Monday. What’s that mean? Well, the upper-level wind will swing around and push clouds and moisture up against the east side of the mountain. This is the opposite of usual. Snow will distribute in strange, unexpected places. Not that there’s all that much coming… The snow level will be 1000′ early and will quickly fall to the surface near Mt. Hood. About 0.2-0.5” WE is forecast for the day (this easterly orographic situation is hard to predict), for 2-5” new. A trace is forecast overnight before the sky turns partly cloudy. Note: by the afternoon, it’s going to be quite chilly on the slopes. Bring extra clothes. Wind: NW 15-20 in the morning, E 15-20 in the afternoon, and E 15-25 overnight.

Partly cloudy sky continues on Tuesday thanks to that east wind. It’s going to be very cold on the slopes… single digits are within reach. Free air freezing level: 0′ for the 24 hour period. Wind: E 15-20 all day picking up to E 20+ overnight. Wednesday looks cold, clear and breezy during the day with high clouds moving in late afternoon. Next chance of flurries (unlikely) is Thursday. The next chance of a real storm system is Sunday. Fingers crossed!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies stick around for one final day before an abrupt switch to easterlies midday Monday. For Sunday, we start with gradients of 0.08 and 0.07, which means you’ll find wind just about anywhere. The western Gorge, west of Mosier, remains drizzly/showery all day. Expect 10-15 there. Move east away from the clouds for 22-25+ as far east as Arlington. River flow is 162kcfs, river temp is 38F, and high temp forecast is 45F.

Monday starts with westerlies at 5-10, but quickly switches. A cold front swings in from the NE and a low drops along the coast. Expect widespread easterlies at 15-30mph, first in the east and then filling in to the west. High temp: 43F and dropping as the day goes on. Tuesday starts with E 10-20 east of Hood River and E 30-40 at Rooster with E 20-30 at Stevenson. The wind holds all day. Easterlies stick around on Wednesday.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Drizzle and showers continue all day in Hood River. Temps will be near 40 early and in the mid 40’s later. Moderate westerlies. 100% chance of rainbows. Monday starts with intermittent mixed rain and snow, turns to sprinkles, and then switches back to flurries in the late afternoon and evening. Up to 1” is possible, but not necessarily likely. Temps will be in the low-mid 30’s early (above freezing) and low 40’s later, dropping in the afternoon. Light westerlies early. Moderate easterlies in the afternoon. 98% chance of rainbows. Tuesday will be partly cloudy all day turning clear overnight. Scattered flurries are possible. Temps will be near 20 early and in the low 30’s later. Moderate easterlies. No rainbows.

Cycling

Out in the woods, the trails above 2000′ are snow covered. Down below: brown pow to the east and wet conditions in Post Canyon. Freeze-thaw information: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you will cause significant damage. Then people will have to come fix your messes instead of building new trails. Better idea: gravel and road riding.
