Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Mountain weather this week is going to be wild. Periods of heavy rain alternate with periods of heavy snow. We might even see the wind shut down the mountain one day; while that sounds bad, it’s actually a good sign, as the snow will be DUMPING while it’s blowing! Ready for the details? I thought so! Before we get there… I’m going on retreat until next weekend. Murphy’s Law that I’ll be gone and unable to forecast…Ok. Sunday is going to be a cloudy day on the mountain. With 850mb temps at 2-4C, we’ll see alternating bands of very light snow or very light drizzle (that’s what happened last night too). The snow level will be 5500′ in the morning and will drop to 4000′ under clear sky overnight. Just 0.1” water value (WV) falls during the day, for just a trace of snow. Wind will be light and variable.
Monday looks clear in the morning and partly cloudy in the afternoon. Clouds increase overnight. The free air freezing level will be about 4000′ early, 6000′ in the evening, and 5000′ after midnight. No precip. Wind: light and variable early, WNW 15 in the afternoon, WNW 25-30 overnight.
The weather gets a heck of a lot more interesting on Tuesday as the jet stream and atmospheric river aim the fire hose at the Northwest. The snow level rises from 5000′ in the morning to 10,000′ under clear sky. It falls to 6500′ in the evening and 4500′ after midnight. Very strong west wind will give a sizable orographic (terrain-enhanced) lift to the precipitation. Moisture holds off until sunset or so. After that, the heavens open up: we are currently expecting about 2.5” to 3.0” of rain followed by 0.5” to 1.0” WV that falls at snow. That’s between 4pm and 4am! That’ll give us 6-10” of dense snow at 5000′ Wind will be WNW 25 early, W 55 in the afternoon (that could shut down all the high speed quads), and WNW 50-60 after midnight.
Very heavy snowfall is in the forecast all day Wednesday along with very strong wind. Do check to see if lifts are running before you head up – the night shift may actually be the best bet. The snow level will be around 4500′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ after midnight. Models suggest 0.8” WV during the day. Orographic enhancement could up that to 1.2”. So, let’s say 8-12” new snow before sunset. Another 0.6”-0.9” is expected overnight, for 7-11” of powder. Wind will be WNW 50+ early, WNW 45+| in the afternoon, and W 35 after midnight.
At this point, it looks like there will be light snow on Thursday morning followed by a switch from snow to rain Thursday night. Heavy, heavy rain falls on Friday morning followed by 1-2 feet of snow on Friday night. It’s worth mentioning that the wind will almost certainly shut down all the lifts on Friday if nothing changes – the forecast is for 70mph out of the west mid-morning. A shift to WSW in the afternoon could bring things back online. That said, we are a long, long ways out from Friday, and the details are almost certain to change!

Temps have come back up above freezing, but you’ll still want to ride with caution. If you see freeze-thaw mud, turn around. That mud means the trail tread has disintegrated. Ride it, and you’ll do permanent damage. Find something under the canopy to ride, and turn around if it’s muddy. Better yet, ride the road, go to the mountain, or hit the gym!Upcoming Events
