Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s been quite the run of snow on Mt. Hood. But guess what happened last night? A bit of mixed precipitation after midnight. When I woke up around 4:30, there was freezing mist on the mountain. It was 30 degrees around 5000′ and -6 degrees at the base of the Meadows HRM lift, about 4500′. Today is the Teacup Tea Party – free snacks, free tea, and free lessons for both Classic and Skate. Nordic groomers report that the grooming is “flawless” this morning. At higher elevations, it’s balling up a little due to warmer temps, but still should be okay.

Weather today will be a little freezing drizzle early, but that should end around sunrise. After that: sunshine in the morning and partly high overcast sky in the afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 0′ with temps in the upper 20’s up high and much colder down low. Wind: NW 20-30 all day long dropping to NW 20-25 overnight.

Monday will be sunny with a few high clouds. The free air freezing level will be 0′ in the morning, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 6500′ overnight. Expect an inversion: it will be colder at lower elevations. Temps will be in the low double digits early and the low to mid 30’s above the inversion. Wind: NW 20-25 in the morning, NW 10-15 in the afternoon, and ?W 15 after midnight.

Tuesday starts clear, turns cloudy, and adds mixed precipitation overnight. It’s very unclear where the low causing all this will track, so it’s nearly impossible to predict precipitation type, temps, and precip quantity. That said, most of the models track the low too far north for snow. They also drag in quite a bit of moisture. So, we’ll keep a close eye on this. Generally speaking, temps run a bit too warm for snow for at least a week after that. Probably. The weather is really active right now, and things could change. Have a great day on the slopes!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Easterlies, easterlies. Saturday night pressures were 29.74/30.21/30.19 for an east gradient of Hi friends! Easterlies continue. Iwash will be 50-55 this morning and will fade to 35-40. Stevenson: 35ish this morning and 30 in the afternoon. River flow yesterday was 75-147kcfs, river temp is 40.46F, and high temp forecast is 17F. Monday will be 60mph at Iwash all day with 40mph at Stevenson. High temp: 17F under sun to the west and Nothing cloud to the east. Tuesday starts with 60F at Iwash and fades to 50-55. Stevenson starts with 40-50 and fades to 35ish. High temp: 20F with sun/Nothing in the morning and freezing precipitation in the afternoon. There is a slight chance of moderately strong westerlies on Wednesday, but my best current guess is that it won’t happen. Read TATAS for the reasons why.

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
