Sunday. More snow for Mt. Hood AND more snow for the Gorge.

DSC_2569
It’s an overcast morning on Mt. Hood, with about 4” of fresh powder on the ground, meaning it’s going to be another busy day at the ski resorts. I talked to someone yesterday who said that 26 was backed up all the way to Sandy with people trying to get to Timberline, Meadows and Skibowl. Wow. Seems like maybe we need a train from Portland to the ski resorts. How’s that for a pipe dream? It’s going to be a rough commute again today, with the snow level at less than 1000′, making for slick roads most of the way to the ski areas. Chain up, people. It’s the law! Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Up on Mt. Hood, expect an overcast morning with the next round of snowfall moving in around 10am. The snow level will be below 1000′ all day today. We’ll see .2-.3” water value (WV) between 10am and 4pm, for 2-4” of snow. We’ll see an additional .3-.4” WV between 4pm today and 4am tomorrow, for another 3-5” of new snow. Wind today will be SW 20 pretty much all day long, swinging to the NW after midnight.

Tomorrow starts out with alternating flurries and sunbreaks and stays that way until the afternoon when the sky will fully clear. The snow level will be at the surface early, rising to 500′ midday and falling back to the surface tomorrow night. We’ll see .1-.2” WV during the day, for an inch or a few inches of new snow (likely the lower end of that). Wind tomorrow will be NW 20-25 all day.

Tuesday looks clear and cold with temps on the mountain in the teens to low twenties. Clouds move in during the afternoon, and some snow falls overnight. The free air freezing level will be at the surface all day, with the snow level at the surface overnight. We’ll see .2-.4” WV between 10pm Tuesday and 4pm Wednesday for 2-4” of new snow. Wind will be NW 20 in the morning, W 15 in the afternoon, and light and variable in the evening.

We’ll see flurries and clouds Wednesday morning, giving way to clear sky Wednesday afternoon. Thursday looks sunny. Starting Friday, we go into a mega inversion, with temps at the higher ski resorts climbing into the 40’s.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s officially nuking in the western Gorge this morning with Rooster reporting 40mph and Steven’s Locks with a pre-dawn 24mph (thanks, iWindsurf/iKitesurf for those numbers). Expect the east wind to back off just a touch this afternoon to 30-40, fading more tonight. Models suggest we’ll have light and variable wind tomorrow morning, west wind at 12-15 midday, and light and variable wind in the evening, but I suspect that’s overly optimistic. I think we’ll have east wind at 15-20, backing off to light and variable in the afternoon. Expect east wind at 20-30 on Tuesday, 40-45 on Wednesday, 45-55 on Thursday and 55-65 on Friday. Neato!

Random Morning Thoughts

I was lying on my couch last night just letting my mind wander, and I came to this great insight. I considered getting up and writing it down, but I was comfortable and sleepy and my cat had just plopped herself down on my chest. I thought for sure I’d remember – it was important!

Right now, for the life of me, I can’t remember.

Our minds are funny. We clearly don’t control them, we clearly can’t keep track of them, and they fool us all the time. If we want to remember what we’ve learned, we need to consolidate the new information in more than one way. Sticky notes are one good way to keep track of things, and journaling is another. I totally recommend journaling, maybe not as publicly as I do it, but perhaps in little book that you keep on you at all times.

The more domains of existence you incorporate into your learning process, the more likely you are to remember things. In other words, you can use mnemonic devices to stick something into your brain, you can make art about it, you can journal about it, you can tell a friend about it and have a conversation… the choices are endless. The more options you incorporate, the better you’ll learn.

As an interesting side note, research shows that hand-writing things is more effective for learning than is typing into a computer.

So, the next time you come to an insight, don’t just assume you’ll remember. Take steps to incorporate what you’ve learned. You’ll change your life and make yourself a better person. As if you weren’t already good enough… you are, I swear! Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

I woke up this morning to 3/4” of snow outside my window, and it sounds like there are similar snow totals around the Gorge, judging by reports in the Hood River Weather chatroom. We’re right on the border for sticking snow today – the temp was 31 degrees in town this morning and is forecast to rise to just 33. Maybe it will. Maybe it won’t. Anyway, we’ll see another round of snow between 10am (or a little later) and tomorrow morning, for 2-4” of additional snow. If it doesn’t stick now, it’ll stick tonight, as temps drop into the upper 20’s. A big east gradient sticks around this evening, keeping us nice and cold. No rainbows.

Tomorrow starts out with a full-on TATAS travel advisory: expect snowy and icy roads through the entire Gorge for your morning commute. We’ll see temps in the upper 20’s early. If, and this is a big if, the east wind switches to west mid-morning as predicted, we’ll see temps rise into the upper 30’s. If not, we won’t. Anyway, tomorrow’s weather is totally dependent on that wind switch – no switch and we see clouds and flurries all day. Switch and we see partly cloudy sky, sprinkles, and rainbows. Either way, expect a dicey morning commute and a dicey evening commute as temps drop back below freezing.

Tuesday starts out with a mega-Nothing: cloudy sky down low and sunshine above. High clouds move in during the afternoon, and snow starts falling around 10pm, giving us 1-3” by Wednesday morning. Temps will be in the mid to upper 20’s early with very icy roads. Temps will rise to the mid 30’s in the afternoon (maybe) and fall back into the 20’s overnight. Light and variable wind in the morning switches to east wind in the afternoon.

Your Wednesday morning commute looks very snowy and icy with the Nothing overhead to keep you company. For the rest of the week, a massive inversion develops, with temps in the Gorge in the 20’s and temps on the mountain in the upper 30’s to low 40’s. We’ll probably see the Nothing for much of this period, but hopefully the air will eventually dry out enough that we’ll have sunshine. Hopefully.

Road and Mountain Biking

No, please don’t do it. It’s snowy anyway, but once the snow is gone, if you shred Syncline, you’ll be riding in freeze-thaw mud. You’ll destroy the trails. You’ll make singletrack into braided roads, and people will have to come fix the mess you made. No, no, no. Take your fat bike and go ride on the snow. Leave Syncline alone!
