Gorge Wind Forecast

Moderate westerlies continue for the next three days. Forecasts are varying quite a bit from day to day, lowering the accuracy of any forecast more than 24 hours out. Apparently this is due to remnants of a powerful Pacific storm upstream of us; models struggle with this scenario. Anyway… back to the wind in the Gorge.

Sunday sees an offshore battle between an approaching low pressure system and a weak high pressure off the CA/OR border region. Morning gradients of .08 and .05 suggest the Corridor and Near East are the best bets today. Nearly clear sky over Hood River confirms that. So, we’ll have morning westerlies at 17-21 from Viento to Mosier with Rufus in that range too. Stevenson: 5-10 under the clouds. Rowena/Roosevelt: 13-16. By late morning, the wind will settle into a groove and stay there. You’ll find 21-24 from Stevenson to Rufus. River flow is 106kcfs and temp is 65 degrees.

Monday morning brings marine air and low clouds to Hood River. Those will burn off quickly. A warm front approaching offshore will decrease wind quality and increase wind coverage in the afternoon. Morning westerlies will be 8-11 from Stevenson to Mosier. In the afternoon, westerlies rise to 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River with gusty 19-23 from Mosier to Roosevelt.

A warm front crawls over the area Tuesday morning followed by a cold front in the afternoon. This does not bode well for wind quality, consistency, or predictability. Call it “light and variable” first thing in the morning. Midday wind: 11-14 from Stevenson to Mosier. As that cold front approaches in the afternoon, wind responds by jumping to gusty 21-25, briefly, from Stevenson to Rufus. We’ll likely see some rain overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.

Road and Mountain Biking

All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill!

Upcoming Events

Events today include a windsports swap meet at Windance starting at 8am. There’s a by-donation yoga class at Samadhi in White Salmon at 9am. There are free art classes for kids, accompanied by parents, from 1 to 3 at Columbia Center for the Arts. For a totally different type of fun, head to Moiser and get yourself some u-pick cherries.

Looking ahead to next weekend, there’s kiteboard for Cancer at the Hood River Event Site. Plan for a windy weekend, because it’s always windy for KB4C. There’s an E-bike festival at Meadows next weekend, and there are four days of trail work parties in the Gifford Pinchot to prepare for the Trans-Cascadia mountain bike Race.
