Sunday, minus the sun.

Although it’s not windy this morning, the day does hold the potential for afternoon westerlies that’ll get you on the water. Oh. Wait. Iwind/iKite’s free trial continues today, and so does Kiteboarding for Cancer, meaning the Event Site is not open to windsurfing. Okay, back to the forecast… In addition, the long range (and as…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Iwind/iKite’s free trial continues today, and so does Kiteboarding for Cancer, meaning the Event Site is not open to windsurfing. Okay, back to the forecast… In addition, the long range (and as always, unreliable) models are predicting wind for the next five days. So, rest up on this cloudy, light wind morning (or go ride a bike or read a book), and the wind will return later. Our 7am gradients, in case you were wondering, sat at .03 (pdx-dls), .01 (dls-psc), and .16 (eph-dls). Not much, in other words, but enough for 10-13 in many locations. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Expect up-and-down wind in the 8-13 range this morning picking up to 15-18 after noon as a weak weather system approaches. You’ll find the strongest, steadiest wind this afternoon between Swell and The Dalles, although models do show a short-lived stronger burst at Arlington late in the evening. That one probably isn’t worth the drive – it’ll be gone before you’re there, and it may have something to do with thunderstorms.

The trough of low pressure causing today’s cloudiness and lackluster gradients shifts eastward tomorrow, leaving us with a more favorable setup. Expect 13-16 from Swell (perhaps Mosier, depending on the clouds) to Doug’s in the morning with 22-25 from Swell to The Dalles in the afternoon. Beaches further east should see 15-18 tomorrow afternoon.

The overall picture improves on Tuesday afternoon as offshore high pressure intensifies and a weak weather system moves through. Expect 13-16 near Hood River in the morning with 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon. When that weather system moves through (watch for thin high clouds), we’ll see the wind drop everywhere but Stevenson and Avery, so get on the water earlier, rather than later, if you can.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 10-13. Jones tomorrow, 12-15. Jones Tuesday, 20-23. Sauvie’s today, NW 10-13. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 12-15. Sauvie’s Tuesday, 12-15.

Coast forecast (north/central/south). Today: light onshore, SW swell 3′ at 15 seconds. Tomorrow: 5-10/5-10/20-25, W 4′ @ 9. Tuesday: 10-15/15-20/30-40, W 4′ @ 10.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Nothing to say here today.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s a gray sky start to the day, and that’s left me feeling groggy and sleepy and desirous of more time under the covers, or perhaps just time in my hammock with a book. On the other hand, part of me wants to jump on my road bike and cruise around in the cool weather. And another part of me, the strongest part, wants to go hit up a yoga class with my friend Bianca.

It amuses me when I see so many things co-existing. It’s fun to try and figure out which is the most pure of the voices, meaning which is most deeply connected to my heart. You can play this game too! How many competing voices are you seeing right now? Make a list of all the things you feel compelled to do today. Then make a second column for why you want to do those things.

Some of them will say “I should”. That’s someone else’s need speaking. The options that say things like “connection”, “play”, “love”, those are your heart speaking. Make sure you get in at least on of those today, and you’ll feel better overall. =)

Enjoy the gray day. What a treat to have one in the middle of summer!

Gorge Weather Forecast

Holy gray sky, Batman! Expect cloudiness for the morning with decreasing clouds midday and another round of high clouds this afternoon as another weather system moves in. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and the mid 70’s this afternoon (NOAA says 82, but that seems silly to me). Light wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Tomorrow looks partly cloudy with temps in the low 60’s early and upper 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows. Expect a low near 60 Tuesday and a high in the low 80’s with sunshine and west wind that increase to moderate-to-strong.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s still dry and dusty out there on the trails, but it’ll sure be a nice day on the pavement with clouds overhead and cool temps surrounding you. There’s a shop ride leaving Mt. View Cycles at 5:15 tonight, and the Tour de France is on the TV at Dirty Fingers this evening.

Kiteboarding for Cancer continues at the Event Site today, and they need people for the Never Ever Kiteboarded race – be there at 10:30 to sign up. First 20 entrants are free.

There are also four free yoga classes today. The first two, at 9am, are at Crossfit Hood River and Yoga Samadhi. There’s a 4pm YogaFaith class at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and there’s a community yoga class at Root Down at 6pm. Have an awesome day today!
