Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Plenty of snow is going to fall over the next couple of days to satisfy anyone who likes seeing the snowpack depth go up. If you’re hoping for light and fluffy snow, you are looking in the wrong place. Most of this will be Cascade Concrete, perfect for building a base and keeping it. Accumulation tapers off Monday night. That’s followed by intermittent light snowfall through the end of the week and then much colder temps.
On Sunday morning, we’re all hanging out together under the atmospheric river. Temps are colder to the north and warmer to the south, but it’s not all that cold anywhere. Hence the Cascade Concrete. The snow level won’t be representative of snow quality – it’s better to look at 850mb temps. They’re about -1C this morning, -2C this afternoon, and fluctuating between 0C and -2C overnight. During the day, we’re expecting about 0.6” water equivalent (WE) for 4-5” dense new snow. Overnight, another 1.0” WE is forecast, for 7-9” of somewhat lighter snow that turns heavier in the wee hours of Monday. Wind… interesting… models are predicting SW 10 this morning, but we’re actually seeing WSW 20-30.. perhaps the front has slipped farther south than models predict. Anyway, the wind this afternoon wind be SW 10-20 through the night.
Monday starts off with very heavy snow. A bit of mixed precip is possible at times thanks to 850mb temps that start around 0C early, rise to +1C in the afternoon, and fall to -1C overnight. Think of this as an effective snow level of 5000′ during the day and 4000′ overnight, but we’re still seeing snow in lower elevations! Anyway, 1.6” WE is forecast during the day. If that verifies, we’ll have 12-14” dense snow perhaps mixed with something less ideal at times, but perhaps not. Another 0.2” WE is forecast overnight for 1-2” more. Wind: SW 10-20 early, SW 20-40 midday, WSW 25 in the afternoon, and SE 15 overnight.
Tuesday starts clear and turns partly cloudy with a short burst of light snowfall int eh evening. The daytime freezing level will be somewhere between 5500′ and 8000′, but it will fall to 4000′ when the precip arrives. Just a couple inches of snow are forecast. Wind: SE 15 in eh morning, SW 10-20 in the afternoon building to SW 20-40 overnight. A few more inches of snow are forecast on Wednesday. Looking deeper into the long-range forecast, we see much colder weather. No giant dumps of snow are predicted, but the snow we have isn’t going anywhere. Enjoy!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
Light and variable wind this morning turns easterly at 30-35 this afternoon. Expect heavy rain in the easterly zones. River flow is 129kcfs, river temp is 45F, and high temp forecast is 38F. Monday starts with easterlies at 40-45 near Rooster and 30-35 near Stevenson. The wind drops to 20-25 near Stevenson and 30-35 near Rooster in the afternoon. High temp: 34F. Easterlies continue on Tuesday with 40-45 near Rooster in the morning and 35-40 at Stevenson. Both back down to 30-35 in the afternoon.

Hood River Weather Forecast
Rain this morning sticks around all day and switches to snow overnight. Temps will be int eh mid to upper 30’s all day. Easterlies. No rainbows. Monday will be snowy. Temps will be in the low-mid 30’s all day. Easterlies. No rainbows. Tuesday will be Nothing cloudy and dry all day with flurries overnight. Temps will be in the low 30’s (icy roads) early and mid 30’s later. Easterlies. No rainbows.

Cycling
FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!
