Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Forecast

Half a foot of snow fell in the last 24 hours on Mt. Hood, and more is predicted for Sunday night and Monday, all day long. Dry weather on Tuesday gives way to another round of snow on Wednesday. Thanks, NW flow, for giving us cool weather and orographic assistance!

Sunday will be overcast in the morning. Snow starts up mid-afternoon and continues all night. The snow level will be 2000′ in the morning, and will rise to about 3000′ overnight. A trace of snow falls before sunset. About 0.6-0.8” water equivalent (WE) falls overnight, for 6-8” new snow. Wind: WNW 20-25 in the morning, W 25 in the afternoon, and W 40 overnight.

Steady snowfall continues until Monday afternoon. After that: flurries and clear sky mixed together. The snow level will be 3000′ most of the day and will fall to about 1500′ overnight. 0.6” to 0.8” WE is forecast for the daytime, for 6-8” of fluffy new snow. About 0.1” WE is forecast overnight, for another inch. Wind: W 40 in the morning, NW 25-30 in the afternoon, and NE 10 overnight.

Tuesday looks sunny and clear all day. The free air freezing level will be 1500′ in the morning and 3000′ in the afternoon and evening. No precip. Wind: NE 10 in the morning, NW 10-15 in the afternoon, and NW 30 overnight. Another weather system moves in midday Wednesday bringing up to a foot of new snow by Thursday morning. After that: models hint at a warming trend with the snow level headed for 10,000’+ by Sunday.

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Strong offshore high pressure sticks around on Sunday and an afternoon weather system joins the fun. Morning gradients of .10 and .08 indicate a windy day. Expect 24-27 at Viento (of course) in the morning with 24-27 east of The Dalles all day. Overcast, somewhat drizzly conditions in the western Gorge keep the wind in the gusty 10-15 range all day. In other words, head east for the best results. River flow is 114kcfs, river temp is 43 degrees, and high temp forecast is 49F. Monday starts with gusty W 13-16 west of Stevenson with 5-10 east of there. Afternoon wind builds to 24-27 from Rowena to Rufus. High temp: 52F. Tuesday starts with westerlies at 5-10 everywhere. The wind builds to 17-20 from Stevenson to Avery with 10-13 in the eastern Gorge. Expect full sunshine all day with high temps in the mid 50’s. Wednesday currently carries a forecast of stronger westerlies. We’ll see if that forecast holds before getting too excited!

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

As needed until next spring and summer.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Cycling

Trailbuilder request: GP is CLOSED. Those of you riding it are doing significant damage to freshly-shaped and not-yet-compacted trail. All that work you’re destroying is being done by about three volunteers. STOP. They anticipate they’ll be able to reopen the trail around April 1st, but if you keep riding it, it’s going to take longer. So, skip GP and ride the brown pow that’s all over the rest of the trails. Excellent dirt is to be found in the lower sections of Post, on Syncline, at Nestor, on Hospital Hill, and probably at Columbia Hills (where there will be lots of Grass Widows and other early flowers). Remember: it’s still winter, and freeze-thaw is possible. If you hit freeze-thaw mud, please turn around so you don’t do permanent trail damage. Whoopdee is especially susceptible to freeze-thaw. Please avoid it until nights warm above freezing.
