Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Forecast

Snow continues on Mt. Hood today as Mother Nature sends lots of love in the form of snowflakes. Looking at the forecast for the next five days or so, we have 4-5” water equivalent, meaning the mountains are going to pick up TONS of new snow. Practice deep snow safety – avalanche hazard and snow immersion hazards exist. Carry your backcountry gear and ride with a buddy. Also, SR-14 and I-84 remain closed, so you’re not getting to Meadows, T-Line, or Skibowl that way!

Expect a storm skiing day on Sunday. Temps have righted and warmed, so the snow won’t be as fluffy as it was Saturday. It’ll still be good. The effective snow level (based on 850mb temps) will be about 2500′ this morning, 4500′ this afternoon, and 5500-6000′ overnight. The mountain picks up about 0.5” water equivalent (WE) today, for 5-6” fresh snow. Another 0.7” is forecast tonight. That’s likely to be messy. It starts as snow and switches to freezing rain and/or snain. Wind: WSW 20-25 this morning, WSW 25-30 this afternoon, and W 40-45 overnight.

Monday likely starts with a lift-icing disaster. Expect delayed openings. Freezing rain or snain in the morning gives way to heavy snowfall during the day and extreme snowfall overnight. The snow level will be 5500′-6000′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ overnight. 0.6” WE is predicted during the day. That may start as rain or messy mixed precip, but will switch to snow. Call it 3-4” new. 1.7” WE is predicted overnight. Yes, you read that right. It’s thanks to NW flow, the BEST for Mt. Hood. That brings 15-20” new snow. Wind: W 40-45 in the morning, W 55 in the afternoon (which will affect lifts), and NW 45-50 overnight (which will affect snow quality).

Duping snow and strong wind continues for Tuesday. The snow level will be 2000′ ‘early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 1000’ overnight. 1.1” WE is predicted during the day, for 12-14” of damned fine powder. Another 0.6” WE is forecast overnight, for 7-9” of the fluffy stuff. Wind: NW 45-50 early (affecting lifts), NW 40-45 in the afternoon, and NW 30 overnight. It would not be surprising if snow totals exceeded predictions by 30% thanks to the orographic enhancement.

Wednesday is a break day: just a trace is forecast during the day under clear sky. EPIC. Snow picks back up overnight and ramps up again into Friday. Ride with a partner. Keep them in sight. Carry avy gear. Be safe. Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Nuking easterlies continue today with 40-50 at Rooster and 30-35 at Stevenson and 20-25 at Viento. Easterlies start the day Monday at 40-50 at Rooster and 30-35 at Stevenson. By midday, they’ll drop to E 10-15. We then see a switch to westerlies west of Cascade Locks and east of Avery. The wind will slowly scour the cold air from above. The central Gorge switches to westerlies a couple hours after sunset, most likely. On Tuesday, we’ll have westerlies at 26-30 through the whole Gorge with a high temp of 44.

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

As needed until next spring and summer.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Light and intermittent snowfall continues today with moderate snowfall tonight. Temps will be in the low 20’s early and mid 20’s later. Easterlies. No rainbows. Monday brings moderate to heavy sleet, snain, or freezing rain in the morning with decreasing mixed precip in the afternoon and sprinkles overnight. Temps will be in the mid 20’s early and upper 30’s later. Easterlies in the morning. Calm wind midday. Westerlies in the evening. 15% chance of rainbows. Tuesday looks drizzly all day. Temps will be in the upper 30’s in the morning and mid 40’s later. Strong westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

We are in winter riding season, and the trails are apt to be fragile. If it was below freezing last night and is above freezing now, don’t ride. If it was below freezing last night and it is sunny now, don’t ride unless you are under a tree canopy for the entire ride. Freeze-thaw conditions, when ridden upon, result in permanent trail damage. Please consider doing something else, perhaps riding a gravel road in the trees or going to the mountain. Thank you!
