Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday was a nice respite from the wickedly strong wind, and lots of people made it out on the river for a mellow day. Today looks stronger, as we start with big gradients of .14 (pdx-dls) and .06 (dls-psc). The daytime hours look like a fairly solid setup, as not much is happening in the bigger picture. Potential negatives: limited marine clouds on the west wind of the state this morning and a front-trough combo approaching late this evening. That said, the temp differential between Rooster and HR suggests that there is cooler, denser marine air in the western Gorge.

We’ll see 22-25 for the early morning session today from Viento to Doug’s. By late morning, Cascade Locks should have 22-25 and the Viento to Rufus stretch would have 26-30. Arlington will be a bit far east to take advantage of the pressure gradients. It’ll probably max out in the 22-25 range today. River flow is 187kcfs and river temp is 67 degrees. 1661 Spring Chinook made it past Bonneville yesterday.

Monday morning starts with an eastward moving low-level front and an approaching trough of low pressure along the coast. This will deepen the marine later. Add to that a 1028mb offshore high and a 1012 inland low, and we have a good recipe for a big day. One thing to keep in mind is that the sounding model suggests slightly unstable air between noon and 2pm or so, meaning we’ll probably see a bit of a lull in the action midday. So, let’s go with 23-27 from Mosier to Rufus for dawn patrol, because it’s likely the marine clouds will get past Hood River. If not, add Swell to the mix, and up the speed to 25-29. By late morning, we’ll have 27-31 from Swell to Arlington. Other than the aforementioned midday lull possibility, the wind should stay in that range all day. I wouldn’t be surprised to see even stronger periods. Cascade Locks, buried in the clouds, will be in the teens until the clouds burn off and then in the 23-26 range.

High pressure builds inland on Tuesday and a front sits well offshore. This combo will knock the wind down a bit: 18-22 from Cascade Locks to Hood River in the morning and 20-24 from Cascade Locks to The Dalles in the afternoon. Wednesday currently looks like 24-28 and Thursday looks like 15-18.

Random Morning Thoughts

Life contains endless ways to spend our time. I often find myself getting excited about this or that volunteer prospect or learning opportunity and wanting to throw myself into them. I’ve learned over time to stop and think about whether I’ll really find fulfillment in these situations, or whether I’m signing up because I feel like I “should”.

Our character strategies can come into play in these decisions as well. For example, if you are someone who thinks you have to take the lead on everything because others won’t follow through, you are might be more likely to take on extra work or extra volunteer commitments. And it’s likely you’ll overextend yourself, possibly burn out, or possibly not have time for your friends, family, and all your responsibilities.

All that said, I encourage you to volunteer. Studies show that if you give away your time to causes you find worthy, you’ll come away happier with a feeling of life purpose. The key is making sure your commitments are in line with your core values.

So, the next time you think about jumping in to an opportunity, be it work, volunteer or other, stop. Reflect on why you’re doing it. Is this for you or because of some fear you have about others? Are your introjects (internalized voices of others, rather than your heart) telling you what to do? You’ll know if you’re making the right choice by saying “yes”, because you’ll feel a sense of wholeness and rightness and grounding around the decision. Be good. Give back. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Either the dirt is very fast right now or my two days of complete rest worked wonders. I think it must be the rest, because the dirt is getting quite dry out there. It’s time for cherry harvest to be over so we can get a day of rain. In other news, well, there is no other news. The only three rides I have no current information on are Boulder Lakes, Huffman Peak, and Ape Canyon.

Upcoming Events

If you need something to do today, you can head to Cascade Locks and watch skippers handle little sailboats in lots of wind – today’s the final day of the Laser Masters Sailboat Championships. There’s also a free kite, board and foil demo day at the Hood River spit, brought to you by Windance. As an added bonus, there’s a free BBQ and I’m pretty sure beer as well.

There are three community yoga classes today: 9am at Samadhi in White Salmon, 4pm YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm restorative yoga at Pure Yoga in Hood River. There’s family-friendly pickup touch rugby today at the Hood River Marina at 11.

Next weekend is the Gorge Skiff Regatta in Cascade Locks from Friday to Sunday. The Gorge Outrigger Race is planned for next Saturday, and the High Cascades 100 mountain bike ride is in Bend on Sunday.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
