Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
It’s a super stormy Sunday on Mt. Hood, and a lot of snow will fall during the day due to orographic enhancement. Monday looks sunny and warm – if you’re headed up, be there for first chair because the snow quality will deteriorate rapidly. Tuesday brings another round of light snowfall, and so does each day after Tuesday.
Sunday’s details include very strong wind and heavy snowfall. The snow level will be around 4000′ all day, dropping to a clear sky, free air freezing level of 2000′ tonight. The mountain will receive approximately 1.4” water value (WV) during the day, for 12-16” of new snow. A few more inches of snow will fall in the evening. Wind will likely impact lift operations: W 55 until 2pm, WNW 45 in the late afternoon and evening, and W 10-15 after midnight.
Monday looks sunny. The free air freezing level will be 2000′ early, 10,000′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ after midnight. Wind will be W 10-15 early, SW 15 in the afternoon, and SSW 25 after midnight.
Tuesday starts off with high clouds and the possibility of a pretty sunrise. Snow starts up around 8am, continues for a few hours, and then reverts to clear sky or partly cloudy conditions in the evening with mid-level clouds after midnight. The snow level will be 8000′ early, 5500′ when the snow hits, and 3000′ after midnight. Wind will be SSW 15-20 early, SW 25-30 midday, and WSW 30 in the afternoon, with SW 20 after midnight.
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday all look snowy, with the snow level fluctuating between 1500′ and 4500′. About half a foot of snow will fall for each 24 hour period. Models agree on these days, but not on next weekend. Sounds good!
Random Morning Thoughts
Sometimes it’s easier to have a story about why things are the way the are. It’s easier, even if that story is self-deprecating and painful. When we have a story, an explanation, we have a sense of control. We think we can change things when we may not actually have that ability.
In our culture, a common story is that if we change our appearance, we will find true love. Maybe we think we need to be thinner, stronger, blonder, have a bigger butt (they’re in right now!), harder and more prominent pectorals, larger breasts or a bigger penis, be taller, shorter, etc. Sure, these physical characteristics play a role in finding a partner, but changing them is unlikely to change our situation. Knowing we can change them, however, gives us a sense of control over our relationship status, and a sense of control is more comfortable than feeling powerless.
This is just one example. Can you see how you’re creating stories to give you a sense of control over various aspects of your life? You can try letting go of the stories, but for more fundamental change, look at your comfort level with feelings of powerlessness. If you can get more tolerant of that feeling, you’ll be able to stop creating stories and see reality more clearly. May you have equanimity. Have an awesome day.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Road and Mountain Biking
It is very much too wet to ride anywhere today, and if you choose to do so, you will damage the trails. You can make up for that by showing up at tomorrow’s HRATS work party at 9:30am at Family Man. In other news, it’s also too wet to road ride (unless you’re into that kind of thing), but Monday afternoon looks epic for road biking.
Upcoming Events
Sunday events include by-donation yoga at Samadhi at 9am, ping pong at the Armory at 10am, meditation at Flow at 11am, pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Waterfront Park at 11am, YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 4pm, and restorative yoga at Pure Yoga in Hood River at 6pm. The HRATS have a trail work party at 9:30am today at Family Man.
