Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Forecast

Precipitation continues all week long, and most of it comes in the form of snow. Looking into the longer-range forecast, it appears we’ll have dry, colder weather about a week out, but the details aren’t clear yet.

For Sunday, expect wet snow to fall all day. Periods of rain are not out of the question especially later in the day, but there’s also no guarantee of rain. The snow level will be 4000′ early, 5000′ this afternoon, 5500′ overnight, and back to 5000′ Monday morning. About 0.5” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today, for 3-5” of dense snow. Another 0.3” WE is forecast tonight. That’s an additional 2-3” of wet snow. Wind: SW 20-45 in the morning, SW 15-30 in the afternoon, and SW 20-35 overnight.

Monday sees another round of dense, Cascade Concrete snow. The snow level will be 5000′ all day and will fall to 2500′ overnight. 0.5” WE is predicted for the daylight hours. That’s 3-5” wet snow. Another 0.1” WE is forecast overnight for an inch of higher-quality snow. Wind: SW 20-35 all day and all night.

We’ll see snow flurries on Tuesday morning with a period of clear sky. Heavier snowfall returns overnight, but this should be higher-quality snowflakes. The snow level will be 2500′ during the day and 1000′ overnight. About 0.1” WE is forecast during the day for an inch of new. Overnight, approximately 0.5” WE is forecast for 5-7” of powder. Wind: SW 15-20 early, WSW 25-450 in the afternoon, and WSW 30-45 overnight.

Snowfall really picks up on Wednesday as the wind turns northwesterly. That’s the best direction for Mt. Hood for a couple of reasons. 1) it’s the best direction for orographic (terrain) assistance, and 2) it tends to be colder snow. The forecast calls for about 0.7” WE for 7-9” dry powder during the day followed by a trace overnight. The snow level will be 500-1000′. Cold temps continue through the extended forecast, but the deets are not all clear. Looks like a good week to spend some time on the hill!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Easterlies stick around all day in the western Gorge: 15-20 at Rooster and 10-15 at Viento and Stevenson. River flow is 166kcfs, river temp is 39, and high temp is 46. Monday starts with 20-25 at Stevenson, 15-20 at Rooster, 10-15 at Viento and light wind everywhere else. Afternoon: 10-15 at Stevenson, calm at Rooster, calm elsewhere. Tuesday starts calm. In the afternoon, westerlies pick up to 10-13 form Stevenson to Rowena with gusty 18-23 from The Dalles to Rufus and light westerlies east of there. As of this morning, it looks like we’ll have westerlies Wednesday through Friday.

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

As needed until next spring and summer.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Rain sticks around pretty much all day with a bit of a break between 10am and 1pm. Temps will be near 40 early and in the mid 40’s later. Easterlies. 5% chance of rainbows. Monday looks rainy all day and dry after 4pm with light rain returning overnight. Temps will be near 40 early and in the upper 40’s later. Easterlies, then calm wind. 5% chance of rainbows. Tuesday looks sprinkly. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Light westerlies. 97% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

We are in winter riding season, and the trails are apt to be fragile. If it was below freezing last night and is above freezing now, don’t ride. If it was below freezing last night and it is sunny now, don’t ride unless you are under a tree canopy for the entire ride. Freeze-thaw conditions, when ridden upon, result in permanent trail damage. Please consider doing something else, perhaps riding a gravel road in the trees or going to the mountain. Thank you!
