Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Deep marine clouds and offshore high pressure combine on Sunday for a solid day of desert westerlies. Starting Monday, we’ll be in the mid-latitude version of the doldrums. Winds turn light for four days. The only respite will be a light evening thermal breeze between Stevenson and Hood River.

So, get Sunday’s wind if you can. 6Am gradients were 0.11 (pdx-dls) and 0.05 (dls-psc). Readings were 18-21 from Stevenson to Mosier with 10-13 near Lyle and 25-28 east of The Dalles. Models suggest your best bet will remain east of The Dalles today, with 25-28 pretty much all day between Avery and Arlington. Clouds stick around long enough in the western Gorge to drive the wind into the low teens between Stevenson and Hood River, perhaps Mosier too. You may do a bit better from Lyle to Doug’s in the afternoon – 22-25 is possible there. River flow is 108kcfs. River temp is 71F. Hood River high: 74. Biggs: 81.

Offshore high pressure battles with a heat low pushing northward on Monday. Gorge wind starts in the calm-to-light zone. That’s it for the daytime. Evening westerlies pick up to 8-11 from Stevenson to Hood River. Eastern Gorge: light and variable all day.

A light westerly breeze may (or may not) start Tuesday, but either way, the wind goes calm by mid-morning. Late in the day, the wind picks up to 11-14 or so from Stevenson to Hood River with 5-10 to The Dalles and light/variable wind to the east. Next chance of wind is Friday. Models hint that westerlies will stick around through the weekend. That said, the forecast is also for 105F through Saturday, so we may see that forecast change. Enjoy today, and stay cool this week!

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users. DNR land in Eastern Washington (Buck Creek / Nestor Peak) is all closed to recreation due to fire danger.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Gunsight, Underhill. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed” due to wildfire last year.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
