Sunday. It’s not the last day of February…

DSC_0329_HDR
At 6:30 this morning, it was many degrees above freezing at 5000′, yet the precipitation falling from the sky was snow. That happens sometimes when the air is cold enough overhead to support such madness. Anyway, given that it was 37 and snowing, it looks like we can expect the incoming system to be snow today, despite indications in the models that it could come in as rain. The snow level will be around 5500′ early, 4000′ at 10am, 3000′ this afternoon, and 1500′ overnight. We’ll see precip between 7am and noon or so, followed by a break in the weather and another round of light flurries this evening. Expect .3-.5” water value (WV) this morning, for 1-3” of wet, heavy snow. Another .1-.2” WV falls tonight, for less than 2” of new. Wind today will be SW 20 early, rising to SW 25-30 mid-morning and becoming WSW 35 this afternoon, with W wind at 35 overnight. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Monday starts off clear, turns cloudy late in the afternoon, and sees some light precip after midnight. The snow level will be 1500′ early, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ overnight, rising to 7500′ by Tuesday morning. We’ll see a trace of precip between midnight Monday and 4am Tuesday, likely in the form of mist. Wind Monday will be W 25-30 early, light and variable midday, and SW 10 in the afternoon and evening, picking up to SW 20 overnight.

Tuesday sees light precip early with a round of heavier precip between noon and 4pm, followed by mostly clear sky. The snow level will be 7500′ early, 6000′ when the afternoon precip hits, and 2000′ overnight. That means we’re likely to see .1” WV of rain in the first, lighter round of precip. The afternoon precip is about .5” WV, probably as mixed precip, and probably not bringing much accumulation. Wednesday looks mostly clear and warm, with the freezing level rising to 9000′ in the afternoon. Models are hinting at pineapples toward the end of next week, but that’s a long ways out!

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Sunday, you can expect early morning east wind at 25-30 at Rooster rock. The easterlies will disappear by noon, giving way to strong west wind. We’ll see gusty W 22-25 from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles from noon on, with 28-32 from Avery to Arlington this afternoon. I suggest you drive preemptively, because it won’t last all that long. River water temp is 42 degrees. Monday looks like light west wind early and E 20-30 in the afternoon at Rooster. Tuesday starts off with E 30-40 at Rooster with west 24-28 through the whole Gorge from mid-afternoon on.

Random Morning Thoughts

In English, there’s this phrase we use: “I just can’t win with him.” Generally we say that out of frustration, when we’re tired of arguing or fighting for ourselves, or when it seems that nothing’s going our way. It’s usually an exaggeration that comes out of our exhaustion.

But once in a while, you truly can’t win with someone, because they’re playing life as win-lose and you, most likely are not. Why do people end up in this state? I suspect it’s because they’ve experienced things in life that are life-threatening (and when people are children, a lot of things feel life threatening – abandonment, for example). When people have experienced existential terror, they learn that they must win at all costs. Losing equals annihilation. Remember this when you’re dealing with someone who turns every interaction into one where you lose – you are dealing with someone in a great deal of pain.

If you do find yourself in a situation where the ground constantly shifts in order to place you at a disadvantage, the only way out is to step outside the system. That can mean removing yourself physically or emotionally or in some other creative way (changing the communication patterns is one option). But as long as you feel like you can’t escape, you’ll get hurt. That’s the double-bind that I was talking about yesterday. You have to create freedom for yourself, or you’ll end up down. May you be free. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

Judging by the Strava, most people were out gravel grinding yesterday. I assume that’s in part because Post is a muddy mess. With more rain on the way today, you’ll want to let it be. Syncline is a much better call, although it’s going to be mighty windy if you hit it after noon. The roads? Well, they’ll be windy today too.

Upcoming Events

Today is yoga day: 9am at Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River. There’s also community meditation at 11am at Flow Yoga, pickup touch rugby at 3pm at the Mosier School, and ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5pm.

Have an awesome day today!
