Sunday. It’s COLD! Wind, snow, and a crappy commute week.

DSCF9601-Pano
It’s cloudy with flurries on Mt. Hood this morning, and that sort of weather will continue through tonight, although warming air may impact the precipitation type and/or the snow quality. The snow level today will be at the surface for much of the day. Late this evening, depending on how quickly the incoming system erodes the cold pool, we may see the snow level rise to 5500′. We’ll see .4” water value today, for 3-4” of snow, possibly followed by a period of sleet, needles, or freezing rain. Wind will be SW 15-20 early and SW 25-30 overnight. Continued after the chart.

Tuesday starts out with snow flurries and transitions to mostly cloudy sky by noon. The snow level will be 4500′ all day, dropping to less than 500′ by Wednesday morning. We’ll see .1-.2” water value, for 1-2” of snow on Tuesday morning. Wind will be SSW 10-15 early, rising to SW 20-25 in the afternoon, and falling to SSW 10-15 overnight.

As of right now, it looks like we’ll see a couple inches of snow on Wednesday morning with the snow level around 2500′. Looking ahead to the rest of the week: light flurries alternating with sunshine, and then considerable model disagreement towards the end of the week.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Expect east wind at 35-45 today and east wind at 30-40 tomorrow. Tuesday’s east wind starts at 35-45 and drops off to 20-30 in the afternoon. Wednesday’s east wind looks like 20-30, and Thursday’s easterlies look like 15-20. All east wind, all the time.

Random Morning Thoughts

My “maintenance required” light is on right now, meaning my car wants me to change its oil. I don’t know how I’m going to accomplish that when it’s 23 degrees in my parking lot, but I’ll figure it out. Anyway, I went into Walmart to pick up some oil yesterday… (stop right now and notice what you thought about me when I said, “I went into Walmart” – okay…) I looked around me, and I saw all sorts of people who didn’t look like me, didn’t speak the same language as me, and who had a different fitness level than I do.

Walmart and its shoppers are the brunt of many jokes. People who are different than us are often the brunt of our jokes.

We have a choice: when we walk into a place where people are different, we can choose to judge and criticize those people. Or we can look around us and make the choice to love each and every person, no matter their skin color, their clothing, their fitness level, or the places they choose to shop.

We don’t know anything about the strangers who pass by us. Judging them is a reflection on who we are, not on who they are. When we chose to love, rather than judge, we make ourselves and the world around us a better place. This will show on our faces; instead of throwing out looks of contempt, we throw out looks of acceptance. The people around us will see this, take it in (unconsciously or consciously – it doesn’t matter), and they will be happier for it.

Be accepting of those around you, and you will be more accepting of yourself. That will benefit you and everyone around you. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s cloudy and very cold this morning, and there’s precipitation headed our way. You know what that means: SNOW! Temps today will be in the low 20’s early and the upper 20’s this afternoon. We’ll see 1-2” of snow today between 10am and 7am tomorrow. The western Gorge will get .3-.4” water value, the first half of which will fall as snow and the second half of which may fall as freezing rain. East wind. No rainbows.

Tomorrow starts out with lingering flurries or freezing sprinkles and ends up cloudy with another round of precip moving in after midnight. Temps will be in the mid 20’s in the morning. The sounding model says we’ll go above freezing tomorrow afternoon, but I’m not sure that’s correct, given the depth of the cold pool and the east wind. So, tomorrow night, after midnight, we may see some snow or sleet or freezing rain, .1-.2” water value of whatever it is. East wind. No rainbows.

The sounding model and 12k temp model have us above freezing on Tuesday. The 4k is less optimistic. As of right now, it looks like we’ll be right around 30 degrees in the morning and perhaps right around 32 in the afternoon, falling back below freezing Tuesday night. We’ll see freezing precip of some sort through 10am Tuesday, after which we’ll just have clouds. East wind. No rainbows.

The Gorge drops back below freezing on Wednesday with another round of precip in the morning, probably snow.

Road and Mountain Biking

A bunch of people did the Dirty Fingers extra Cold Lap yesterday. You people are tough. Speaking of tough, I saw Marcroft out riding on New Years Day at 8:30am. It was 25 degrees. Marcroft you’re tough too. People, if you want to ride in this weather, consider picking up some BarMitts to keep your hands warm.

Upcoming Events

Today is the Teacup Nordic Tea Party. They have free XC and skate lessons today along with tea and snacks. Registration opens at 9am and continues through a bit after 10am, after which there are lessons. I’ve also been advised that there are very pretty frozen waterfalls both along the XC trails at Meadows and in the Gorge. You may want to skip the Gorge driving today due to the weather, however.

In other news, there are three free yoga classes today: 9am at Yoga Samadhi (and that one’s awesome – I’ll vouch for that), 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River. There’s also community meditation at 11am at Flow Yoga. Coming up tomorrow: Tai Chi at 1pm at the Mt. Hood Town Hall. At 6:30 tomorrow, there’s community yoga at Samadhi, community yoga at the Mt. Hood Town Hall, and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center.

Have an awesome day today!
