Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! The shortwave moving through this morning is causing a little more trouble than anticipated; it’s resulted in more instability than previously forecast, and it will have some impact on desert heat. But it’ll still be windy today – don’t you worry. We’ll also have wind tomorrow and Tuesday and potentially (but likely not) Wednesday before a brief break for at least the first half of Thursday. Westerlies return with a vengeance on Friday as cool air zooms in from the NW.
Let’s look at today. Pressures started at 30.02/29.89/29.84 for gradients of 0.13 and 0.05. Looking at the satellite image, it appears the back edge of this system is near Troutdale, and it also appears that limited marine clouds have drifted into the west side. We’ll see westerlies at 23-26 from Viento to Mosier this morning with 13-16 east of Mosier to Arlington and 10-13 at Stevenson. Late in the morning, westerlies pick up to 25-28 from Stevenson to Avery with Rufus at 16-19 and Arlington 10-13. The wind holds (mostly) at 25-28 from Stevenson to Avery through the evening. Swell may drop to 19-22 mid afternoon. Rufus, where the current was 214-258kcfs over the last 24 hours, picks up to 26-29 late afternoon as does Arlington. Threemile and Boardman: 23-26 late in the day. River flow over the last 24 hours was 197-258kcfs, river temp is 60.08F (finally over 60!) and high temp forecast is 78F for Hood River and 87F for Pasco.
Monday’s strongest wind looks like Dawn Patrol, prior to 8am: 25-28 from Viento to Mosier: The wind falls to 21-24 and fills in from Stevenson to Mosier around breakfast time. Thanks to a low moving towards BC and associated oomph at upper elevations, the wind drops to the teens at Swell in the afternoon. Expect 16-19 there with 19-22 from Stevenson to Viento and from Mosier to Doug’s for the rest of the day. To the east: 11-14 until the evening when the wind rises to 17-20 from Avery to Arlington. High temp: 80F for Hood River.
A low moves into BC on Tuesday, and high pressure builds offshore of Oregon and Washington. This is the kind of day where reality is likely to beat the models. Forecast: 29-32 east of The Dalles. West of The Dalles? We’ll have to wait for a little more clarity on marine layer intrusion and persistence.
Extended: lesser wind is in the cards Wednesday and Thursday. Cooler air is likely to push in late Thursday or Friday. This brings back the west wind and keeps it around for a bit. We’ll leave it there for now. Have a fun day on the river!
