Mt. Hood Forecast
Mostly clear sky starts Sunday on Mt. Hood, but a honest-to-goodness storm breaks upon the slopes this afternoon with lift-stopping wind and blizzarding snowfall. Light snowfall continues Monday before we transition back to clear sky on Monday night. Looking closer at Sunday, you’ll want your shades in the morning, but the sunshine only makes it to early afternoon, at best. A strong cold front slams into Mt. Hood in the afternoon, most likely raising the wind to the point that lifts can’t run. The snow level will be 7000′ in the morning, 4000′ when the snow arrives, and will fall to 1500′ overnight. About 0.1-0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast before 5pm, for 1-2” new. Another 0.6-0.9” WE is predicted overnight, for 6-9” of increasingly dry, increasingly wind-affected powder. Wind: W 35 in the morning, WSW 40-60 early afternoon, W 60 (bye, lifts) in the afternoon, and NW 40-45 overnight. Expect zero visibility on the roads due to blowing snow and extremely heavy snowfall in the 3pm to 9pm period. Orographic snowfall continues on Monday. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and back to 1500′ overnight. About 0.1 to 0.2” WE is forecast during the day, for a couple inches of new snow. A trace is forecast overnight before the sky clear. Wind: NW 40-45 in the morning, NW 25-30 in the afternoon, and NW 20-25 after midnight.
Tuesday looks sunny. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 1000′ in the morning, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ after midnight. No precip. Wind: NW 20-25 early, NW 5-10 in the afternoon, and light and variable overnight. Wednesday looks sunny and warmer with the FAF rising to 10,000′ with light and variable wind.
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
From looking out the window Sunday morning, you wouldn’t be able to predict what’s coming: a super-nuker of a day on the river. NWS even issued a Wind Advisory for Arlington for gusty to 55mph. I agree! What’s causing all the ruckus? A very strong cold front backed up by increasing offshore high pressure. We’ll start with 10-13 or so all through the Gorge with gradients of .11 and .07. By noon, we should be seeing extremely gusty 25-35+ in the western Gorge and 35-45 east of The Dalles, continuing most of the night. Definitely take a partner with you, and keep the other folks on the water in sight. Consider a PFD in case you knock your head or have to swim. River flow is 111kcfs, river temp is 45, and high temp forecast is 58F.
Very strong offshore high pressure, 1040mb, drives another, less gusty day on Monday. Westerlies start at 15-18 or so in the partly cloudy western Gorge with 24-27 from Lyle to Boardman. As the weather pattern stabilizes, the wind will drop off in the far eastern Gorge. For the afternoon, we’ll have 15-18 in the west and steadier 24-27 from Lyle to Arlington. High temp: 54F. Tuesday starts with 7-10 all through the Gorge. Afternoon wind will be 17-21 from Stevenson to Mosier with 13-16 from Lyle to Doug’s. High temp: 56F.
Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s
On vacation until the end of snowsports season. Will return in April or May.

Cycling
Cows are out on Hospital Hill. No parking at the corral. No dogs on the trails. No exceptions. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they let us use their land, and in return, we respect their rules! Post Canyon: GP is CLOSED. Those of you riding it are doing significant damage to freshly-shaped and not-yet-compacted trail. All that work you’re destroying is being done by about three volunteers. STOP. They anticipate they’ll be able to reopen the trail around April 1st, but if you keep riding it, it’s going to take longer.
