Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

An unexpectedly nice day on the mountain (the sun came out for a bit) on Saturday gives way to mixed precip over the next several days. Models do hint at accumulating snow on Tuesday into Wednesday and perhaps again on Thursday. That’s followed by a warmup at the end of the week, but the details of all that are rather unclear. Honestly, there’s enough uncertainty in the temps starting midday Thursday that I”m not sure a forecast that far out is going to be accurate. Let’s not, okay?

Precip swarms the mountain Saturday night. UP to 0.6” mixed precip is forecast with temps at 850mb rising from +1 to +2C. This indicates rain is likely overnight. The snow level will be 5000′ to start and will probably climb to 5500′ overnight. Hard to pin down accumulation at 5000′ when we’re not sure what the p-type will be, eh? A few inches at most? Wind will be SW 20-30 overnight rising to 20-40 after midnight.

Sunday brings mixed precip all day as temps at 850mb (approximately 5000′) bounce around between +2C and +3C. That’s a bit warm. We could still see wet snow or snain, but it’s almost certain to be rain below 5000′. Except where cold air is locked in. Then it’ll be freezing rain. About 0.3” mixed precip is forecast during the day. That’s followed by another 0.3” mixed precip overnight. Wind: SW 20-40 in the morning, SW 15-30 in the afternoon, and SW 5-15 after midnight.

Somewhat cooler temps Monday midday lead to snow after a mixed or rainy start. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 5000′ overnight. About 0.5” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day for a few inches of new. Overnight, 0.4” WE is forecast for about 3” of dense new snow. Wind: SW 5-15 early turns to WSW20-30 by sunrise and holds through the day and night. Looks like we’ll pick up a few more inches of snow on Tuesday followed by mixed precip Wednesday. Looking at Thursday, we have quite the temp spread in the 5000′ forecasts, so I’ll leave this for now. Happy snow shredding!

Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
