Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

I don’t know if wind would be good or bad right now along with the extreme heat. It would get you on the river, but it would turn every spark into a wildfire. We’ll have light easterlies Sunday and Monday. On Tuesday, strong westerlies start up and stick around through the end of the week. Despite the wind, temps remain in the 90-100 range.

Looking at Sunday, you’ll want to grab your SUP or prone paddle board. The day starts with light easterlies except at Viento where the wind is 15ish. By mid-morning, easterlies climb to 15-20 from Rooster to Viento with light easterlies elsewhere. The western Gorge drops to 10-15 mid-afternoon, and areas east of Viento pick up to E 5-10. River flow is 169kcfs, river temp is 66F, and high temp: 110F.

The heat and light easterlies continue on Monday. Morning wind will be 15-20 at Rooster 15ish at Stevenson and Viento, and 5mph east of there. Midday wind holds at 15-20 from Rooster to Viento and picks up to E 5-10 to Arlington. Afternoon wind: E 10-15 or so all across the land from Rooster to Arlington.

Tuesday sees the wind turn onshore, but that doesn’t mean the weather will cool off. Dawn Patrol kicks off with 21-24 from Stevenson to Mosier. The wind builds as the day progresses. By mid-afternoon, it picks up to 26-30+ from Stevenson to Rufus and holds through the evening. Arlington is likely to join in the fun late in the day. High temp Hood River: 104F. Arlington: 114F. Maybe go elsewhere?

Models are suggesting a very, very strong Corridor day on Wednesday. They continue strong westerlies through Friday, at least. It’s worth noting that high temps will be 90+ for this entire period.

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

Cycling

Trail guesses: Whoopdee, dry; Post, dry; 44 Road, dry. Falls Creek: good. From the 44trails.org website… Open trails: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks (to 1.5 miles above the 4410 road), 450 to the junction with 15 mile, Underhill. Upper 450: patches of snow and 10 trees down.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure. Surveyor’s Ridge: clear of snow and trees. Other 44 Road Trails: clearing in progress. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. No parking at the corral. No dogs on the trails. No exceptions. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they let us use their land, and in return, we respect their rules! New Whoopdee: open.
