Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Today’s the proverbial calm before the storm. Building clouds will foreshadow that something’s coming, but you’ll need the forecast to know exactly how much. It’ll be big, that’s for sure! Snow continues through Tuesday morning, and then we zip back to super-warm slopeside temps by Thursday.
We start with Sunday morning. Increasing high clouds give way to deepening high clouds. Snow starts up around 5pm. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 4000′ this afternoon, 3000′ in the evening and perhaps up to 5500′ after midnight. Models hint at a brief period of 850mb (~5000′) temps climbing to 32-34F, but intense precipitation rate could keep the precip as snow at 5000′. No precip during the day. Overnight, models suggest 0.7” water equivalent (WE) with wind increasing to WSW 60mph. That’ll give us some orographic enhancement. Let’s call it 6-10” of increasingly dense snow as temps briefly warm. Wind: SW 10-20 during the day, SW 30-50 around midnight. WSW 50-60 after midnight.
Monday will be the storm skiing day of storm skiing days, assuming lifts can run. It’ll be close. The snow level may briefly rise to 5500′ early in the morning (icing up lifts and making a giant mess), but it will fall to 2500′ by 11am and 1000′ overnight. We are expecting 1.2” WE during the day with wind at W 45-50. Overnight, we’re expecting 0.5” WE with wind at WNW 45-55. Adding in orographic enhancement and taking into account the early-morning bump in snow level, we get 14-17” of daytime snowfall and 9-12” overnight fluffy powder. We already discussed wind, so let’s leave it there.
Our resorts will all be in storm recovery mode early on Tuesday, but you’ll be ready for powder. The snow level will be 1000′ early and 2000′ in the afternoon. Colder air and easterlies move in overnight for a free air freezing level of 0′. During the day, 0.3” WE is forecast with WNW wind. Call that 4-6” new snow thanks to orographic assistance. Overnight – should be dry. Wind: WNW 45-55 (lift stopping, perhaps) early, WNW 30-40 late morning, W 25 in the afternoon, and E 10 overnight.
Wednesday looks sunny with warming – the free air freezing level (FAF) goes from 0′ in the morning to 9000′ in the afternoon to 12,000′ after midnight. Wind: E 10 in the morning becoming S 10-20 in the afternoon. Thursday looks very warm and sticky – best to pick a lowland activity. Temps will be 70ish in the valleys that day. Looking longer term, models hint at a return to snow-friendly weather next weekend. Wow. What a week. Enjoy!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
Westerlies are forecast through Tuesday with very strong westerlies on Monday and Tuesday. Sunday starts light and variable. Orchardists are happy. Ahead of an approaching front, the wind picks up this afternoon. You’ll find gusty 13-16 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 18-22 from Avery to Arlington. River flow is 154kcxfs, river temp is 45F, and high temp forecast is 59F.
Monday will be quite rainy. You’ll need to head far east to avoid the rain, and even then, you’re likely to find intermittent rain. You’re also likely to find thunderstorms and gusty westerlies. The wind starts calm during the morning downpour. By late morning, it builds to gusty 20-35 in the western Gorge (where it’ll be raining) and gusty 30-40 east of The Dalles. High temp: 46F. Go for the daily double if the lifts are running at the resorts! Tuesday sees high pressure zip northward and start to push inland. In the morning, you’ll find gusty 18-22 and showers between Stevenson and Hood River. Mosier to Boardman will be partly cloudy or sunny with 29-33+. Afternoon: gusty 14-17 in the western Gorge (maybe more than that) and 26-30 from Avery to Boardman. Easterlies return at 30-35 on Wednesday.

Cycling
It’s brown pow season with perfect dirt. Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, judging by Strava. Better get it now before the rain comes!
