Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Light snowfall most of yesterday continued into last night. The resorts picked up about 4” of new snow in that period. That’ll give you a nice groomed surface, but there was enough wind overnight to make it inconsistent. Today is the final day of the Strava race at Meadows Nordic – the first 10 people to complete all five segments get a Gorge is my Gym t-shirt and a free year subscription. Looking into this upcoming week’s weather, we see a little snow Monday morning before temps rise into the “too warm” range by the afternoon. Above-freezing weather is forecast for the slopes through Wednesday with peak temps and sunshine on Tuesday afternoon.

For Sunday, expect flurries in the morning, high clouds most of the day, and light snow from mid-afternoon on. The snow level will be 1500-2000′ this morning, 2000′ this afternoon, and 1500′ overnight. Just 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast for the daytime. That gives us an inch of new. Just a trace to 0.1” is forecast tonight. Up to one more inch will fall. Wind: W 25 this morning, W 20 this afternoon and overnight.

Snowfall continues Monday morning. Warming temps above mean the snow that falls will be dense and wet. We’ll see a transition to rain mid-afternoon. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning, 6500′ by 5pm, and 8500′ overnight. 0.3” WE is forecast during the day, for 1-3” wet new snow. Another 0.5” WE falls as rain overnight. Wind: W 20 early, SW 10-20 in the afternoon, WSW 20-25 in the evening, and NW 20-30 after midnight.

After some brief pre-dawn drizzle on Tuesday, the sky clears and temps shoot upwards – they’ll max out near 50F on the slopes! The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 8500′ in the morning and 10,000′ in the afternoon. Just a trace of precip is predicted before the day dries out. Wind: NW 20-30 early fading to S 5-10 in the afternoon and SW 10-15 overnight.

Wednesday may bring a trace of rain. Models have significant range and uncertainty from Thursday onward. They’re hinting at dry weather until some point during the weekend when a stronger system is forecast. That said, there’s just a ton of uncertainty about temps starting Thursday, so we’ll leave this here. Have a great day on the slopes!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Leftover westerlies this morning are joined by a fresh round of frontal wind this afternoon. The morning starts with gradients of .05 and .06 and westerlies in the 16-19 range at windy spots (Viento, Maryhill, Arlington) with less elsewhere. Give it a few hours. The next system knocks the wind down to 10-13 in the west and gives us gusty 18-23 from The Dalles to Threemile. River flow is 144kcfs, river temp is 42F, and high temp forecast is 48F.

Monday will be calm all day. High temp: 50F. Moving on… Tuesday will be calm in the morning. Easterlies pick up to 20-25 at Rooster and 15-20 at Cascade Locks in the afternoon. High temp: 66F! Models are hinting at a strong west wind day on Wednesday.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Epic conditions are coming for much of next week when the weather will be dry and temps will climb to 60+.
