Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s Sunday morning, and you’ll have a shot at some easterlies today. Late-day westerlies are on tap for Monday. The rest of the week, through Friday, looks rather marginal as high pressure builds and the flow turns barely, just barely offshore. Models continue to hint at westerlies in the low 20’s in the Corridor on Saturday and eastern Gorge for Sunday. Model agreement fades starting next week.
Sunday sees inland high pressure combine with a poorly-defined low scooting north towards BC. This not-ideal setup drives today’s easterlies. We should see a few hours mid to late morning of gusty E 25-30 from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Stevenson with 20ish at Viento. By early afternoon, the wind drops to 25ish from Iwash to Rooster and continues dropping into the evening. The day ends with 15mph or so from Iwash to Stevenson. Viento, as always, drops faster. Get it early. River flow yesterday was 66-90kcfs, river temp is 63F, and high temp forecast is 70F.
Monday starts with a short-lived round of pre-dawn easterlies at 15mph near Iwash Rock. The wind turns calm all through the Gorge mid-morning as a cold front arrives. As it swings through, westerlies pick up, but not until the late afternoon. You’ll find gusty 16-19, with rain showers and rainbows, from Stevenson to Avery after 5pm. High temp: 62F. Tuesday starts with light westerlies and turns dead calm. Light easterlies are forecast through Thursday. At this point, max speeds look to be in the teens, at best. Friday’s forecast looks light and variable.
Models hint at offshore high pressure building next Saturday. If this forecast holds, the heat low will shift to the east side, and westerlies will result. Thermal gradients won’t be at their mid-summer max, obviously, but models think there will be enough for 20ish mph in the Corridor. Obviously I’m very focused on this and have my fingers crossed. Monday will be cloudy and dry early, then quite wet, then partly to mostly cloudy with showers. Temps start in the low 50’s and rise to the low 60’s. Calm wind in the morning. Light to moderate westerlies in the evening. 99% chance of rainbows. Tuesday will be partly cloudy, then mostly clear, then high overcast. Temps start in the upper 40’s and rise to the mid 60’s. Light westerlies in the morning turn calm in the afternoon. No rainbows.

Harvest Fest runs Friday through Sunday at the Hood River Event Site. On October 14th and 28th, Hood River County has work parties on the 140 trail. Meet at 9am at Family Man Staging Area. On October 15th and November 4th, the 44 Trails Association has work parties. HRATS have work parties in Post Canyon on October 22nd and November 12th. The Gorge Winter Gear Swap is Saturday, October 21st at 8am at Hood River Alliance Church.
Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Paddle folks (OC/Surfski) meet at the Hatch Thursday evenings for laps. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Regular bike rides (thanks to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards for collecting). Tuesday is Mountain View’s ride. Meet at 5:45pm on Post Canyon Drive where the pavement ends. Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.
Cycling
As of Thursday afternoon, Whoopdee was perfect brown pow. That suggests Syncline is too. Post? Maybe? See the upcoming events list for upcoming trail work parties. Don’t ride in the mud, or you’ll do permanent damage. Also, people will have to fix your messes rather than building you new trails. Just don’t, okay? Trails on private land that were previously closed due to fire danger (Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee) have reopened. No trails have closed yet due to snow. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
