Thank you for using this forecast. I offer it freely so you can have more fun and plan your life. It does take significant time and energy to produce. If you find yourself using it often, or if you feel your life is more awesome because of my work, please make a donation. You can…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hopefully you haven’t had enough of the westerlies yet, because they’re not going anywhere for the next week! Sunday’s a bit of a complicated setup: the day starts with offshore high pressure and minimal marine layer in Portland. A reinforcing shot of cooler air and a “dying front” arrive from the NW mid to late morning, amping up the gradient. Cross-Cascade temperature gradient reaches 20 degrees this afternoon, contributing to strong westerlies. All that said, sometimes this situation results in under-performing gradients; if it all falls apart between Swell and Hood River, head somewhere else.

Sunday’s numbers: morning gradients of .10 and .04 suggest that the entire Gorge will come into play today. Dawn Patrol was 17-20 from Viento to Mosier with 5-10 everywhere else. The latest model run suggests 25-29 from Stevenson to The Dalles by noon with the wind filling in all the way to Arlington later. There’s a non-zero possibility of a super-nuker period near Swell this afternoon, so bring your small gear. River flow is 315kcfs (experts only for the Maryhill stretch) and river temp is 58 degrees.

Deeper marine clouds on Monday morning combine with desert sunshine for another round of strong westerlies. Dawn Patrol will likely be the strongest wind of the day (if you believe the models). Expect 25-29 from Viento to Mosier all Sunday night into the sunrise hours of Monday. Models suggest the wind will back off a little bit to 24-27 and fill in from Stevenson to Rufus.

A weak low offshore on Tuesday takes the gradients and wind down a notch or two. Morning westerlies start at 8-11. Gusty afternoon westerlies follow: 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier and 20-23 from Rowena to Rufus. Current Wednesday/Thursday forecast: 25-29 both days.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Sunday: 5-10/10-15/30-35, W swell 4′ at 10 seconds. Monday: 20-25/25-30/30-35, W 3′ @ 10. Tuesday: NW5/NW10/N25-30, W 6′ @ 9. Jones Sunday: 26-29. Monday: 23-26. Tuesday: 14-17. Sauvie’s Sunday: 12-15. Monday: 8-11. Tuesday: 5-8 late.

Road and Mountain Biking

If you’re looking for Brown Pow, you’ll find it all over the place. Post is good. Knebal, 8-Mile, Bottle Prairie and Surveyor’s are “open with patches of snow”, according to 44 Trails Association. Logging has begun on Whoopdee, so the main loop is closed. Ronnoc trail will remain open, and so will the climb out. Other open trails: Post, Nestor, Columbia Hills, Hospital Hill, Dog River, Sandy Ridge, Syncline, and Falls Creek from the top. Lower Lewis River is open. Despite advice to the contrary, Red Hill Road was open to bikes on Saturday, 6/1. Proof is on The Strava.

If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new designated parking area. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
