Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Reality far, far outperformed expectations last night. Almost a foot of snow (type: light, wind-affected powder) has fallen since the resorts closed yesterday afternoon. If you’re headed up, be prepared for full-on winter driving above 1500′ or so. FYI, Teacup’s groomer broke yesterday, so there is no grooming there. Looking ahead into the next several days, all we have is snow and more snow with the snow level hovering around 1500′.

Sunday starts with the snow level around 1500-2000′. 850mb temps hold, and so does the snow level. We’ll pick up 0.2” to 0.3” water equivalent (WE) during the day (with a chance of sunbreaks early afternoon) for 2-4” powder. Another 0.6” WE is forecast tonight, for 6-7” more. Wind: NW 40-45 early fading to W 20 this afternoon and becoming SE 20-25 overnight.

The exact track of an incoming low on Monday morning will affect the forecast, but it won’t affect it too much: lots of snow is predicted. Exact totals depend on exactly where the heaviest bands of moisture set up. For now, the snow level will be about 2000′ in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 500-1500′ overnight. About 0.9” WE is predicted during the day, for 8-10” new. Another 1.3” WE is forecast overnight, for 12-15” increasingly light powder. Wind: SE 20-25 early, N 15 in the afternoon, and NW 25-35 overnight.

Snow continues on Tuesday. The snow level will be near 1000′ in the morning and will rise to 1000-2000′ in the afternoon. 0.5” WE is predicted during the day, for 5-6” new. Another 0.4” WE is forecast overnight, for 4-5” more. Wind: NW 25-35 early, W 25 midday, variable to 10mph in the afternoon, and W 5-10 overnight. Snow continues to pile up Wednesday through Friday! Total snowfall between the writing of this forecast (Sunday morning) and next Friday is somewhere between 30 and 50 inches. Wow. That is some serious April snowfall!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies today give way to easterlies tomorrow and westerlies on Tuesday. Don’t expect high-quality wind – offshore low pressure will impact the quality and strength. For today, Sunday, we max out with 25-29 midday from The Dalles to Arlington with 22-25 to Threemile. West of The Dalles, you’ll find drizzle, or at least intermittent drizzle, with gusty 14-17 (more at Viento, but also more rain). River flow is 162kcfs, river temp is 46F, and high temp forecast is 46F.

Monday starts with E 30-35 and very heavy rain from Rooster to Stevenson with 15-20 from Viento east to Arlington. Afternoon wind turns calm in the west, holds at E 10-15 east of Hood River, and then turns northerly at 10-15 east of The Dalles. High temp: 44F. Tuesday starts with light westerlies in the west and W 12-15 east of The Dalles. Afternoon wind becomes light and variable. High temp: 46F.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Cycling

First, most trails are too wet to ride. If you do, you’ll do damage. That’s not nice. Next, we could experience some sub-freezing temps. Remember the rule: if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing or exposed to the open air now, don’t ride it. You’ll do significant damage. If you ride in the mud, you not only mess up your bike, you do significant damage to the trails. Your brown pow is coming. Go shred the mountain until the trails dry out! Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, judging by Strava.
