Sunday. Chilly morning. Perfect afternoon. Enjoy!

As of sunrise, there was very little wind on the river. The only places that will change today are in the western Gorge – Steven’s Locks, Rooster, and Home Valley – where we’ll see easterlies at 15-18 later on today, probably lasting through the evening. Fish counts at Bonneville yesterday were 12,905 Chinook and 961…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

The east wind will pick up overnight, for 25-29 at Rooster and Home Valley tomorrow morning early, followed by 25-29 at Stevenson midday. The easterlies tomorrow will back off a little in the afternoon, perhaps down to 22-25. You know easterlies – get them mid-morning for the best ratio of wind to cold, because it will be in the low 40’s on the river tomorrow morning!

Tuesday starts off with east wind at 15-18 and backs off to light and variable wind, possibly switching to light west wind in the afternoon. Wednesday currently looks like west wind at 24-27, but I’m not sure I’m buying that, given the setup.

Random Morning Thoughts

I officially start grad school tomorrow. Wow. I am so excited. Every cell in my body is jumping up and down with joy and I have a big s***-eating grin on my face right now. Yay!

I’m also thinking back on what the application process was like. It was horrible, not because the application was difficult. It was the thought of how my world *might* change in terms of free time, finances and possibilities. (Don’t worry – the forecast will continue forever – I love this too!) To be honest, I worked myself into quite a state while filling out applications.

And here I am now, a little nervous, but mostly just excited.

When we are contemplating change, we really freak ourselves out sometimes. Our brains are wired to create negative futures – that’s how we stayed safe when saber-toothed tigers still roamed the planet. We were cautious, because a wrong move could result in hunter human being hunted and eaten. We still do this, even the most mentally healthy among us. It takes a real paradigm shift to picture how we’ll feel after the change is done, rather than all the things that could go wrong.

You probably have some change happening in your life. Try picturing how you’ll feel when it’s over and done and you’ve made your peace with it. Yes, the process of change will be hard. Set that aside for a moment and hold the eventual outcome (after you’ve moved, healed, etc.) in your mind. Sit with the peacefulness of that place. I’m sitting here picturing me being a therapist. I’m pretty stoked, despite the three years of hard work that lies between me and that vision. I hope you’re stoked, or at least have found some relief, in whatever you’re picturing.

You’re awesome. I promise. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a beautiful and quite chilly morning here in the Gorge with clear sky and temps below freezing in Parkdale, Mt. Hood, and Glenwood. The sounding model didn’t predict that, and neither did I. Brrrr. It’ll be in the upper 30’s in HR this morning and in the mid 70’s this afternoon with light wind. Tomorrow looks a few degrees colder in the morning with mid-70’s again in the afternoon. Light east wind. Tuesday looks the same: clear sky with temps right around 40 early and in the mid to upper 70’s in the afternoon. Light and variable wind Tuesday. No rainbows for the three day period.

Road and Mountain Biking

We’re looking at east wind for the next few days, and that means that the road biking will be spectacular, because there won’t be much wind at all around Hood River. Remember to do your rides in the opposite direction you would for a west wind day, and have fun! Out on the trails, the woods will be quiet (with scattered cries of delight from happy bolete and chanterelle hunters) with the lack of wind. Enjoy that too!

McCurdy Farms, Hood River

Need pears? Need apples? Need a suggestion for a good bike ride around here? The McCurdy Farms fruit stand halfway up Peggy’s Roost Hill (2080 Tucker Road, just below Portland Drive) has the best prices on the best fruit and the best ride suggestions too. Fruit prices are $.50-$.75/lb for beautiful pears and apples. Cycling advice is free. They have lots of my favorite pears, Comice. Maybe they have your favorites too. Stop by and say hi to Natalie and Craig when you ride by on your Valley Loop bike ride. Come back later for lots of fruit and suggestions on other rides. McCurdy Farms – the secret fruit stand not on the Fruit Loop map. Visit today.

Upcoming Events

Today is Sunday, and the Battle of Barlow cross race is in Troutdale today. Cooper Spur hosts a race next weekend. Today is the fundraiser run for the HRVHS XC team. Meet at Kickstand Coffee at 9am and donate whatever you can – it costs these kids over $100 to join the XC team (I think that’s criminal – all kids should have access to sports for free). If you want to see kids running, make a donation.

There are several other events today including three by-donation yoga classes: 9am Vinyasa Flow at Yoga Samadhi, 4pm YogaFaith at Pure Yoga, and a class at 6pm at Root Down Yoga. There’s pickup touch rugby at 3pm at the Mosier School and ping pong at the Hood River armory at 5:30. Tonight is the Super Blood Moon eclipse. The best viewing will be on the east coast, but if you can find a spot where you can see the moon right around sunset, you too will be able to see the full lunar eclipse.

Coming up tomorrow, there’s free Tai Chi at 1pm at the Mt. Hood Town Hall and free yoga at 6:30 at both the Town Hall and Yoga Samadhi.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
