Gorge Wind Forecast

You’ll be delighted to know that there’s been a bit o’ trouble at The Dalles sewage plant. E. Coli was released into the Columbia, so beaches downstream are poopy. Officially tagged by our friendly wastewater treatment folks: beaches between East Mayer (Rowena) and The Dalles. No word yet on when this will be resolved. That’s a bummer, because there’s a decent chance of wind today, today being Sunday. Not sure if I’ll be able to do a forecast on Monday.

For Sunday, the day starts with light and variable wind. In the afternoon, a low pressure system slides into eastern Oregon. This will have a few impacts. 1) increase pressure gradient; 2) destabilize atmosphere in the desert; 3) after it moves east, the atmosphere will stabilize in the west. This isn’t an idea setup, especially given that there’s a chance of thunderstorms. That said, I think gusty 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier is likely by noon. If everything plays out just right, we could have 28-33 from Viento to Rufus after 2pm.

Monday sees high pressure briefly build inland. That gives us 18-23 from Viento to Arlington to start the day. The wind will back off to 5mph or less east of The Dalles in the afternoon. The Stevenson to Mosier stretch might just eke out 12-15 in the afternoon, but 10-13 looks more likely.

Tuesday starts out light and variable. An approaching cold front in the afternoon will bump up the westerlies. This is an even less idea setup. However, gusty 26-30 is possible after 4pm from Stevenson to Rufus. Timing will definitely be everything. After the front moves through on Wednesday morning, we’ll be left with 15-18 in the west and 20-23 east of Mosier.

Random Morning Thoughts

You might not have heard this, but … the struggle is real. While it’s true that we need to push ourselves to keep moving forward, we need to push ourselves at a pace that works. That pace is different for each person. Going faster can cause all sorts of emotional distress. The flip side of that is that going just a little out of our comfort zone will build capacity to go even further outside that comfort zone.

How does this play out in a concrete sense. Well, you might think you ‘should’ be spending more time improving your career chances. But you might be terrified of taking that public speaking class that could help. So, maybe that’s too much. Instead, perhaps you could do something that’s one step closer to that. Give a speech to a friend. Record a video of yourself speaking and watch it. Use your creativity to figure out what you can do, not what you should do. Then do it!

A corollary of this is that we often judge ourselves in hindsight. How often have you said, “I should have done…” or “I wish I’d spent more time doing…” It’s very easy to make these judgments now. You are, after all, a different person than you were then. So, it’s important to judge your past by the person you were in the past, not the person you are now. Change is possible, and you are proof of it. You’d make different choices now because your pace and capacity are different now. May you have compassion for yourself. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

It’s Sunday, and there are little fluffy clouds above. Actually, they’re more medium fluffy clouds, but whatever. As unstable air moves in, we’ll have a chance of thundershowers today. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and low 70’s this afternoon. Light wind early becomes strong westerly this afternoon. 17% chance of rainbows. Monday starts off cloudy and turns sunny.
