Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! It was windy yesterday, as predicted, but the wind exceeded the forecast by about 5mph thanks to longer-lasting clouds in the city and extra warmth in the desert. Look for a similar setup today – set your sights on the afternoon. Ensembles are all-in on a big wind day tomorrow. Tuesday: probably not windy, and definitely cooler, although some ensemble members give us gusty teens for Tuesday and Wednesday. Models have finally started to come into some sort of agreement from Tuesday onward. It’ll definitely be cooler. It’s just not clear if it’ll be cold, clear, and dry with easterlies or if we’ll end up in a slightly warmer setup with intermittent rain. Either way, it doesn’t look great for wind after Monday. Before I forget… don’t forget to bring your wetsuit inside and dry it out if you wore it yesterday. It’s going to be cool enough that climbing into a cold, damp wetsuit will suck!

Sunday, however, looks just fine. The day starts with 29.85/29.79/29.77 for gradients of 0.06 and 0.02. As a low in northern CA shifts inland today, offshore high pressure contributes more energy to the setup. That low should help keep the west side cloudy. East side: warming. Gorge: increasing wind, of course! We’ll see a period of 15-18 from Viento to Swell this morning, a probable dip midday, and a return to 21-24 this evening from Stevenson to Doug’s and potentially to Rufus. River flow yesterday was 66-92kcfs (swell was good!), river temp is 62F, and high temp forecast is 62F.

Now, let’s look at Monday, shall we? Solid offshore high pressure gives us strong NW flow into the PNW. This will keep the west side, as far east as Hood River, in the clouds and allow the east side to bask in the sun. We’ll have strong west gradients right off the bat. Your dawn patrol forecast is 25-28 from Mosier to Arlington with gusty 20’s to the west of Mosier. You could stay in the Corridor, but the wind will be steadier to the east. Head somewhere between Lyle and Threemile for 28-32 (maybe a touch more) all the way through sunset, AKA time to get dinner at Amayah’s Indian Cafe in Biggs.

Tuesday: wet in the afternoon. Maybe some teen-strength westerlies prior. Wednesday: models are all over the place. Some even have snow at 1000′. So… let’s not predict beyond that other than to say… lots of things are possible, but strong westerlies probably aren’t. Make sure you get Monday. You look sick to me. Definitely have the wind flu and can’t go to work. See you on the river!

Cycling

Lots of brown pow out there. Go get some for yourself! There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. See events section of this report for upcoming trail work parties on various trail systems. Don’t ride in the mud, or you’ll do permanent damage. Also, people will have to fix your messes rather than building you new trails. Just don’t, okay?No trails have closed yet due to snow, but we’re likely to lose the highest-elevation trails, at least temporarily, on the 25th . If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
