Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Another hot and breezy day is on tap. Make the most of this one and tomorrow (which will probably be a bit breezier); we’re looking at a pause in the action on Tuesday – a hot and sticky pause, in which case you’ll want to take up dock starting. Westerlies of the rather gusty variety return on Wednesday and Thursday. Following that, models have us settling back into the Classic Gorge Setup. It’s worth mentioning that models are not handling the impact of (climate change) warmer-than-normal weather on Gorge wind. They’re continually overestimating how windy it will be, and that’s requiring a bit of adjustment. One more thing before we immerse ourselves in the forecast: don’t forget the Bridge closes at 7pm daily and does not reopen until 7am.

All right. Sunday kicks off with pressures of 30.02/29.92/29.89 for gradients of 0.10 and 0.03. Offshore, we have the rather weak northeast Pacific high, and in the desert, we’ll have 100+ degrees and a supportive heat low. No marine clouds were present, which will result in the wind under-performing a bit. Expect 18-21 from Viento to Swell this morning with 16-19 from Hood River to Mosier. Stevenson joins a couple hours into the morning at 18-21. Models suggest 26-29 from Lyle to Arlington this afternoon with gusty 15-18 at Swell and 18-21 at Stevenson, Viento and Mosier. But… with the models over-predicting, I”m going to nudge that down to 23-26 from Lyle to Arlington. Add in Threemile and potentially Boardman (both 100 degrees) in the evening. River flow over the last 24 hours was 94-205kcfs (it usually picks up mid-afternoon). High temp forecast is 89F for Hood River and nearly 100F out in the desert. River temp: 69.8F.

We probably won’t see our savior, marine clouds, reach the metro area Monday morning, but we should see a cooler start. This gives the desert an early jump on heating and results in a windier day than Sunday. Dawn Patrol looks like 19-22 from Viento to Swell with 10-13 to the east. Westerlies quickly jump to 24-27 from Stevenson to Mosier (11-14 to the east) and hold through mid afternoon. At that point, the metro area heats up. Swell and Hood River drop to 17-20. Stevenson and Viento should hang in with 20-23. From Mosier to Rufus, the wind fills in at 22-25 in the afternoon and holds through the evening. Farther east: less, probably not enough. High temp: 88F.

Venmo

On Tuesday, a disturbance races north along the coast, destabilizes the atmosphere, and interrupts the synoptic-scale (big picture) pressure field. In English, the wind will be lighter. As of this model run, the wind starts at 11-14 from Viento to Swell and drops to near-nothing. High temp will be pushing 100 (assuming it doesn’t get too cloudy), and humidity will skyrocket in the afternoon. Plan for some sort of water-based activity.

Extended: messy offshore action continues Wednesday and Thursday. Westerlies respond with gusty 20-something wind. More settled, but still somewhat action-oriented, offshore conditions return on Friday and (probably) continue through the weekend. This gives us a setup akin to the Classic Gorge setup. Stronger westerlies are in the cards. Stay cool. Stay hydrated. Have fun out there today!
