Sunday. Another windy day. Blowout race is today.

DSC_3327-Pano
Well… yesterday was a weird day on the river, wasn’t it? I can’t tell you if today will be more or less weird than that, but I can tell you that in all my driving around yesterday I discovered that chicken thighs are on sale for $.98/lb at Fred Meyer in The Dalles. Given the inland progression of the marine layer this morning, it’s likely you’ll be somewhere near The Dalles if you’re looking for strong wind today. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

The 7am gradients were .12 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc). Those numbers suggest you’ll want to be somewhere between Lyle and Rufus today for the best chances of a good session. If you, however, happen to be participating in the Blowout (the 17 mile downwind race from Stevenson to Hood River), you’ll probably want to stick with that section of river! Anyway, we had wind in the upper teens to low 20’s everywhere except Stevenson early this morning. You can expect 20-23 from Swell (gusty) to Arlington (not so gusty) through mid-morning.

As the desert warms, expect the wind to pick up to 24-27 from Mosier to Rufus (models suggest Arlington will back off as the day goes on). Viento-to-Hood River is a big question mark today; with marine air past Hood River, we’ll need those clouds to burn off before we see 24-27 in that stretch. It’ll probably happen. Stevenson will hover in the 10-13 range early and slowly build to 20-23 by early afternoon.

Monday looks like 11-14 early from Viento to Mosier with 18-21 midday from Stevenson to Mosier and 21-24 in the afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles.

Tuesday sees a deep marine layer as a trough of low pressure moves east across the region. This isn’t a great setup for wind, but models suggest we’ll see gusty 24-27 east of Mosier early with 24-27 from Viento east to Arlington in the afternoon. Wednesday looks like it’ll max out in the 21-24 range.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve given up sleeping with my cat, because she wakes me up every night wanting to cuddle. It wouldn’t be a problem if I weren’t so busy and sleep-deprived with school this quarter. Given my workload, not getting enough sleep is a problem, so we sleep apart.

I worried that this would impact her negatively. After all, if I had a partner and my partner never slept with me, I’d be bummed out. But cats aren’t partners, and we can’t predict their behavior based on our own. The same goes for the people around us – they’re unlikely to act or feel exactly as we would in a given situation.

A perfect example of this is what happens when you put a cat on a diet. Many people worry that restricting food will make the cat hate them. On the contrary, cats tend to become more affectionate when hungry, in the hope that they’ve shaped your behavior to feed them in response to affection (cats are really good at shaping human behavior – better than we are at shaping cat behavior).

My cat is responding in the same way to restricted access to me. She’s more affectionate, not less. The moral of this story, of course, is to not confuse your feelings and behaviors with the feelings and behaviors others may exhibit in the future. Let yourself be you, and let others be others. Have an awesome day.
