Gorge Wind Forecast

Go outside and look this morning, and you’ll see a breezy start to the day. Guess what? That picture will be repeated all the way through Thursday or so. But first order of business today is to get yourself to Lot 1 for the CGW2 swap meet. That starts at 7am (for sellers to arrive – $10 to sell) and 8am (for buyers to arrive). In theory, it finishes around noon, but I bet most of you will be out on the river by then!

Speaking of the river… Portland webcams show a partly to mostly cloudy start. That marine layer will help the wind hang on all day. Pressures at 6am were 30.08/29.94/29.89 for gradients of .12 and .05. Gradient-only forecast says anywhere between Stevenson and Rufus at some point today. Let’s see what the actual forecast says… We have 23-26 from Viento to Hood River (Mosier too, perhaps) to start the day, and we have 14-17 at Stevenson and out east. An approaching front will likely cause a bit of a shift late morning, so aim for the early session if you can. Still… Models bring the wind back to 23-26 from Stevenson to Doug’s or Avery this afternoon with 12-15 at Rufus and maybe upper teens late afternoon. Guess that gradient-only forecast was incorrect! Stay close to home base. River flow yesterday was 265-334kcfs and starts at 269kcfs today. River temp is 59F, and high temp forecast is 78F. Hey, that’s all pretty near perfect!

Warmer weather all across the land on Monday will knock the wind down just a bit. We start the day with 17-20 from Viento to Hood River with 10-13 at Stevenson and Mosier and light westerlies to the east. Midday wind rises to 22-25 from Stevenson to Lyle. It looks like you’ll have to wait a touch longer for Rowena and Doug’s. For the executive session (after 5pm), there are hints of Rufus, now with low enough current to give it a shot! And executive session timing is perfect for you to stop at the Amayah’s Indian food cart in Biggs and get dinner! High temp: 80F under clear sky.

A system late Monday sends deeper marine clouds and, notably, much cooler air, into the metro area and west half of the state. Heat lingers out east. Dawn Patrol opens with a bid of 25-28 from Viento to Mosier with 7-10 at Stevenson and 13-16 east to Arlington. Models hint at the dreaded midday lull in the Corridor (Swell to Hood River) followed by a return to 25-28 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Rufus. That of course begs the question of “what about midday?” I’m glad you asked! 20-23 from Stevenson to Swell, 25-28 from Mosier to Doug’s, 11-14 at Rufus.

Models continue the 20-something wind Wednesday and Thursday. Generally speaking, the ensembles peg Tuesday and Wednesday as the windiest days of the upcoming five. They then hint at widespread ridging inland (high pressure, no gradient) and a possible rest day on Friday. Maybe. Let’s see. In the meantime, never leave wind to find wind! Have a great day on the river!

Cycling

Post is clear of snow to the top. Dog River and Surveyor’s are clear per my friend who rode them on 5/27. Nestor Peak is clear of snow. Falls Creek isn’t even close! Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: with cool weather in the forecast for at least a few days, it’s a great time to get more seeds in the ground. It’s also a great time to plant. Plants like cool weather. But maybe wait until after today’s windstorm, because plants don’t like nuking westerlies any more than you do! Those of you planting sweet potatoes (yes, you can grown them in the lowlands here) will want to plant those slips like you plant tomatoes – deep. Bury them up to their last set of leaves. They’ll make lots of roots, and lots of roots make for healthy plants that make lots of sweet potatoes. Happy gardening.
