Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Good morning skiers and riders! Spring skiing is on tap again today despite the addition of half an inch to an inch of new snow on the slopes. Groom crew reports that mixed right in and left us with frozen granular. Give it a couple hours to soften up – it was right around 20F up there at dawn. We’ll have spring skiing through Wednesday. Guess what happens on Thursday into Friday? Fresh snow!

Sunday will be mostly sunny all day long. The free air freezing level rises from 2500′ to 5000′ or so and drops back to 3500′ overnight. Temps max out in the low-mid 30s. Wind will be NW 5-10 during the day and variable to 10mph overnight. Monday will be sunny with light and variable wind. The free air freezing level goes from 3500′ in the morning to 8000′ in the afternoon and 10,000′ overnight. Temps max out around 40F. Tuesday starts clear and adds high clouds. Temps max out around 50F. The freezing level starts around 10,000′ and falls to somewhere between 4000′ and 8000′ overnight as a colder system arrives from the west. Wind: SW 10 in the morning, W 15 in the afternoon, and W 25 overnight.

Clouds build on Wednesday, and the freezing level drops to 6000′ in the afternoon and 3000′ overnight. Wind will be 15-25 from various directions. Thursday starts snowy and stays that way all through the night. The snow level will be somewhere around 4000′ for the period. Models are all over the place on how much snow we’ll pick up… anywhere from a few inches to over a foot. We’ll keep a close eye on this. After that, model range increases, but there is the possibility of another round of snow the following week. Have a great day on the snow!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! It took a while yesterday, but the wind finally arrived. The swell was good, the crowds non-existent, and the smiles were big. We’ll see moderate westerlies today (maybe just enough in the afternoon) followed by not-enough easterlies on Monday, and a east-west switcheroo on Tuesday with 70 degree weather.

Sunday sees high pressure building inland. This knocks down the gradients, but might leave us with just enough this afternoon. The day starts with 18-22 east of The Dalles. Don’t chase it. It’ll drop mid-morning to 10-13. After 2pm or so, gradients pick up just a bit from Portland to The Dalles and leave us with the potential (I’d say 50-50 for “enough”) for 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles. River flow yesterday was noticeably up – the elevator was running – 141-186kcfs. River temp is 51.80kcfs (do not make the mistake of wearing a 3/2 like I did yesterday), and high temp forecast is 60F.

The previously mentioned high pressure settles in on Monday. This turns the gradients easterly. Expect 15ish at both Iwash (Rooster) and Stevenson in the morning and 10mph in the afternoon. The wind should stay light or calm near Hood River. High temp: 66F. Tuesday starts with easterlies at 20-25 at Iwash, Stevenson, and Viento, where you might have just 15-20. Jump on it, because it’ll be fading by mid-morning. A weak system approaching late afternoon gives us the potential for gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to Avery. Fingers crossed it happens before dark! Extended: upper teens to low 20s out east. Thursday: light, variable, and rainy.

Temps start in the low 40s and rise to the low 70s. Light easterlies. No rainbows. Rain is possible Thursday..

Cycling

Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral. Whoopdee flowers are in full bloom. Hospital Hill and Syncline have ticks, oaks, and flowers. Columbia Hills is full of flowers and open to your bike. HRATS have a fundraiser on 4/20. Raffle tickets are on sale now. Buy some and support your trails organization. Definitely got a Tack Alert going on out there right now – lots of good dirt. Some areas of Post are still muddy (shady, cool areas), so consider choosing a different spot to ride. You’ll have Post all summer long! Sisterwives and Kleeway in Post Canyon are currently closed for rebuilding. It’s trail-building season. Get on the HRATS mailing list if you’d like to help out. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
