Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s perfectly glassy in Hood River to start the day. If that’s what you’re looking for – no wind at all – get out there and enjoy it right now. Westerlies return early to mid afternoon and stick around through Tuesday. After that, models are suggesting another round of light and variable or light easterly wind for at least a couple of days.
Looking at Sunday, we see KB4C riders impatiently awaiting the start of the Derby. That’ll have to wait until afternoon. With gradients at 0.00 (pdx-dls) and E 0.01 (dls-psc) and cool temps in the desert, it’ll take some time. In the afternoon, offshore high pressure combines with a trough (and cool air) inching closer from the west and (key piece) the heat low shifting east of the Cascades. By 2pm we should have 11-14 from Stevenson to Swell, perhaps to Hood River, but perhaps not quite yet. By 5pm, the wind extends from Stevenson to Mosier at 19-22 and holds through sunset. River flow is 114kcfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 86F.
Deep marine clouds push into the west half of the state on Monday and heat sticks around in the desert. Dawn Patrol kicks off with 27-31 from Viento to Mosier, 20-23 to The Dalles, and 14-17 in the eastern Gorge. It won’t be long before we’ll see 28-32 all the way from Viento to Threemile with periods of 30-35 possible near Doug’s and The Wall, and possibly to the east as well. Stevenson is likely to remain in the clouds with gusty 20-25. High temp Hood River: 69F. Arlington: 77F.
Tuesday starts partly cloudy and turns clear in the afternoon. Westerlies start the day with 19-22 from Viento to Moiser with 12-15 east to Arlington and 5-10 at Stevenson. Sometime around midday, the wind settles in at 21-24 from Viento to Mosier and then fills in to Rufus in the afternoon. Stevenson: 15-18ish after the clouds burn off. High temp: 69F. Wednesday starts with light westerlies and either turns even lighter or switches to light easterly or calm wind. Thursday’s forecast is currently for easterlies at 10-15 or so. Have a great time at the Derby today, and enjoy the nuker tomorrow
