Gorge Wind Forecast

In a fun twist yesterday, the strongest, steadiest wind blessed the Event Site. Today, once this little weather system moves through, will see widespread very strong west wind. But first… SWAP MEET! Take yourself over to Windance to peruse piles of new-to-you gear. Or just to socialize. And in case you were wondering, westerlies of some sort will continue through the middle of the week. After that: uncertainty increases and makes it impossible to craft a forecast.

Let’s look at Sunday. We have strong offshore high pressure, marine clouds in Portland, and we’ll continue to have heat in the desert. There’s no need to rush, especially as we have a front moving through and messing with the wind. That said, you will find mid 20’s between Viento and Swell this morning, teens to The Dalles, and low 20’s out east. The wind is going to build and build and build. Pick your time to pick your speed. By mid to late afternoon, we’ll have 30-35+ all the way from Stevenson to Arlington with 26-30 from Threemile to Boardman. River flow yesterday was 360-425kcfs, river temp is 57F, and high temp forecast is 70F. Consider safety gear and buddy-watching today, as it’ll be windy enough to separate you from your gear at times.

Monday sees a very strong marine push into the Gorge. Dawn Patrol launches with 20-23 all the way from Stevenson to Threemile. The wind drops to 13-16 or so in the west and rises to 25-29 from Mosier to Arlington. Make that 25-29+, just in case; very strong offshore high pressure may cause overperforming wind. High temp: 64F. Tuesday continues the cooler weather. Offshore high pressure weakens just a bit. Westerlies start at 11-14 from Stevenson to Swell with light to calm wind east of Swell. The wind builds during the day and maxes out for the executive session – 21-24 fr4om Stevenson to Lyle. The current forecast for Wednesday and Thursday is mid to upper teens, but that’s subject to change. Beyond Thursday, there’s too much uncertainty to make a forecast. Let’s just focus on today with laser-like intensity and make the most of it. Don’t leave your smallest gear at home!

Just don’t go there. Race days are Saturday and Sunday, approximately 9am to 1pm. June 10th is the Gorge Adventure Race in White Salmon. Multi-discipline = multi-sport day.

Cycling

This weekend is the Enduro in Post Canyon. Stay away! Ride elsewhere! Eldorado has re-opened. Post is clear of snow to the top. Current Post Canyon closures: 140/Blue Car Downhill and connections closed indefinitely. On weekdays, Upper GP, Lower GP, and the top of Baby GP are closed through approximately May 17th. Chorus, and FMS are currently closed and will reopen approximately May 11. Do not violate these closures. Post Canyon is a tree farm, and we ride there at the grace of Hood River County. Thank you!

Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: with cool weather in the forecast for at least a few days, it’s a great time to get more seeds in the ground. It’s also a great time to plant. Plants like cool weather. But maybe wait until after today’s windstorm, because plants don’t like nuking westerlies any more than you do! Those of you planting sweet potatoes (yes, you can grown them in the lowlands here) will want to plant those slips like you plant tomatoes – deep. Bury them up to their last set of leaves. They’ll make lots of roots, and lots of roots make for healthy plants that make lots of sweet potatoes. Happy gardening.
