Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Another day of mid-winter spring skiing is on tap today – temps will be above freezing with sun in the morning and high clouds in the afternoon. Rain returns mid-morning on Monday and sticks around through late morning or early afternoon on Tuesday. Next chance of snow is sometime late in the week, but models are far from agreeing on this. Generally speaking, they call for cooler weather later this month, but they’re hovering right around that 0C-at-5000′ level that we need for snow. In other words, there’s not a lot of clarity on when or how much snow is in play for the next couple of weeks. That said, the 50% percentile for snow for Mt. Hood through the end of the year is 5-10” total. 90th percentile is under two feet. Vote for changes.

Sunday will be a sunny day to start with high clouds later. The free air freezing level will be around 10,000′ all day with temps at 5000′ pushing into the upper 40’s. Hopefully this will soften up at least some slopes and leave us with corn snow. Wax warm for the afternoon session. Today’s wind will be light SW in the morning, S 10-20 in the afternoon, and SW 5-15 after midnight.

High clouds early Monday give way to rain mid-morning. The snow level will be 10,000′ in the morning. It falls to 8000′ in the afternoon. As of this morning, about 0.3” rain is forecast before 4pm followed by 0.5” rain overnight. Wind: SW 10-15 all day rising to SSW 25-55 (depends on exposure) overnight. Temps at 5000′ remain in the upper 30’s.

Tuesday starts with rain, transitions to mixed precip, and maybe adds some wet snowflakes at the end of this system. The snow level will be 8000′ in the morning, 5500′ in the afternoon, and back to 6500′ after midnight. About 0.2” rain or snain is forecast during the day. A trace of snain falls overnight. Wind: SSW 20-55 early turns to SW 20-30 late morning and falls to S 5-10 after midnight. Sun returns on Wednesday and probably sticks around on Thursday. Models suggest a weak system will brush us late Thursday into Friday with another possible Saturday. Those are likely to bring snow, but at most, just a few inches. Extended: lots of variety out there in the extended forecast, but none of those options contains a dramatic change to massive snowfall. So, we’ll keep making the most of what we’ve got, which is certainly better than no skiing at all!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! A nuker of an east wind day is on tap today. Tomorrow looks windy but rainy. Tuesday starts windy and rainy and ends dry with lighter easterlies. We’re back to somewhat stronger east wind on Wednesday and Thursday, probably. After that? Quite a bit of variety in the forecasts, so we’ll leave it there for now.

Today is Sunday, and the iWind/iKite sensors started the day with 60mph at Iwash (Rooster) Rock and 31mph at Stevenson. Viento is down, but the Hatch was reading 13mph. Stevenson will pick up to 35-40mph today, and Iwash will hold at 60mph or so with gusts into the 70’s. River flow yesterday was 102-128kcfs, it started today at 76kcfs, river temp is 47F, and high temp forecast is in the low 40’s under increasingly cloudy sky. Monday starts with 40-45 at Iwash and 30-35 at Stevenson. The wind holds, but rain arrives mid to late morning. High temp: 40F. Tuesday starts with 30-40 and heavy rain at Iwash and Stevenson. Afternoon wind falls to 15-20mph. High temp: 45F. Models currently suggest 25-30 on Wednesday and Thursday, but that’s subject to change. Be safe out there today. Wear a PFD and double-check your leash. Keep an eye on your buddies.

Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information.
