Gorge Wind Forecast
A few days of moderate westerlies are on tap, most of it gusty, but still probably enough to get on the river. We then have one dry day followed by a major decompensation into colder, wetter, less wind-sporty weather.
Looking at Sunday morning, we have an offshore front moving south with high pressure building in behind. Early gradients were 0.07 (pdx-dls) and 0.02 (dls-psc). Viento starts the day with 17-20mph and holds there. That’s a good sign for other locations. The wind will build to 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River by late morning. You’ll find 10-14 at Mosier and light/variable wind to the east. Models suggest building high pressure will drop the gradients after 2pm, leaving us with 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River. River flow is 73,700cfs, river temp is 64F, and high temp forecast is 74F.
Monday looks similar in strength but different in setup. That said, we’re looking at 17-20 at Viento to start with a quick build to 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier. East of there: just 5-10mph in the morning. Late afternoon wind holds at 17-20 in the west, builds to 14-17 from Lyle to Avery, and goes light/variable in the eastern Gorge. High temp: 71F. Last of the 70-something weather!
On to Tuesday. An approaching front brings lots of clouds and gusty weather. Areas west of Cascade Locks will be rainy in the evening. River wind starts at gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to Viento with 10-13 east of Viento out to Arlington. The wind then drops to 10-13 everywhere. Afternoon: gusty 20-25 from Stevenson to Rufus with 11-14 at Arlington. Models have been fairly consistent in calling for gusty 22-27 between Mosier and Arlington in the evening, so keep an eye on that if you’re seeking stronger wind. Longer range… sunny, calm weather on Thursday. Rain will likely return late Friday or this weekend and stick around for a while. High temps will fall just below 60. Enjoy the last few warm, windy days!

Cycling
SDS and Kreps lands have reopened. Washington DNR land is also open now. All other trails are open at this time. Motorized use is still not allowed in areas where it was closed due to fire season. In other news… thanks to last week’s rain, the dirt is nearly perfect in most places. More rain is coming, so get ready for more brown pow!
