Gorge Wind Forecast

Strong east wind sticks around for Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday morning before fading away as an onslaught of powerful Pacific systems takes aim at the Northwest. Can an onslaught take aim? Probably not, but it’s too early for any more appropriate word. Sunday starts clear and cold with pressures of 30.47/30.63/30.63 for an easterly gradient of 0.16/0.00. That’s enough for 35 near Iwash (Rooster) Rock, 30ish at Stevenson, and 20-25 at Viento. The wind sticks around all day. River flow is 65-87kcfs, river temp is 60F, and high temp forecast is 53F.

Monday starts with 40ish at Iwash, 30ish at Stevenson, and 20-25 at Viento. After 1pm, the wind starts to fade. The day ends with 30-35 at Iwash, 25ish at Stevenson, and 15ish at Viento. Tuesday starts with 40ish at Iwash, 30ish at Stevenson, and 20-25 at Viento. The wind fades to 25 at Stevenson/Iwash by midday and falls further to 15-20 in the late afternoon.

Models tend to be too aggressive on ending easterlies, so we may start Wednesday with lingering moderate easterlies. At some point Wednesday (models are trending a bit later), a downpour arrives and ends your desire to be on the river. After that: not much wind is forecast thanks to system after system having some impact on the PNW. Enjoy those easterlies while they’re here!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

A few reports from the mountains yesterday: slopes touched by sunshine had a crust on the snow. Shady areas were powdery. Teacup’s groom was minimal, but it was cold, soft, and fun (watch for rocks, sticks, elk tracks, elk scat, and blazing smiles on the faces of everyone schussing around). The snow we have now is all the snow we’ll have for a while, and a lot of it will melt in the upcoming atmospheric river, aka Pineapple Express. Get it while you can!

Sunday will be clear and sunny. Don’t forget sunscreen. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 9000′ this morning, 10,000′ this afternoon, and 12,000′ overnight. Wind: NE 15-20 in the morning, NE 10 in the afternoon, and variable to 10 after midnight.

Monday will be sunny. The FAF will be 12,000′ all day. Wind: Variable to 10 becoming SW 10. Tuesday: clear in the morning and high overcast later. FAF: 12k early, 10k after midnight. Wind: SW 10 in the morning becoming WSW 15 in the afternoon and overnight.

Rain arrives late Wednesday and becomes very heavy into Thursday. Thank you, Pineapple Express. Temps at 850mb (5000′ or so) will be +6C (low 40’s) along with this system. Say “bye-bye” to the snow that’s there. Another round of pineapples is tentatively slated for Saturday. After that, there’s more spread in the models, but the mean keeps the snow level over 5000′ for the next couple of weeks. Like I said, if you want it, get it right now! Have a great day!

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clear sky this morning stays that way. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and low 50’s later. Easterlies. No rainbows. Monday will be similar, maybe a touch warmer in the afternoon. Tuesday: high clouds early (pretty sunrise) with temps in the upper 20’s. Afternoon: high clouds with temps in the low to mid 50’s. East wind fading in the afternoon. Rain arrives sometime Wednesday into Thursday.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Teacup has a trail work party November 1, 9am-noon. Bring gloves, shoes, hand tools, and saws. Maybe check their FB page to make sure it’s still happening given that there’s snow on the ground. There are Nordic ski swaps on November 4, 4-6pm at the DLR Volvo showroom in Portland. There’s one at Working Hands in Hood River on November 11th, 4-6pm. On November 4th, the 44 Trails Association has work parties. HRATS have work parties in Post Canyon on November 12th. The. November 1st and 3rd is the Warren Miller movie at Andrew’s. On November 28th, Amayah’s has their one-year anniversary party in Biggs. Also, every first Thursday, 1pm to 4pm, they are offering free meals to all. Yup. That’s right. Free Amayah’s once a month!

At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.

Cycling

FREEZE-THAW WARNING: temps dropped into the upper 20’s or less on Saturday morning. Trails that are exposed to open air (not under a tree canopy) are likely to experience freeze-thaw conditions. If you ride on thawed trails, you will do significant and permanent damage. DON’T. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. See events section of this report for upcoming trail work parties on various trail systems. Don’t ride in the mud, or you’ll do permanent damage. Also, people will have to fix your messes rather than building you new trails. Just don’t, okay?No trails have closed yet due to snow, but we’re likely to lose the highest-elevation trails, at least temporarily, on the 25th . If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
