Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy Sunday, everyone! It’s Blowout Day: 19 miles downwind from Stevenson to Hood River. Give those racers the right of way, and cheer them on. It’s no small undertaking. There should be plenty of wind for the Blowout, but it won’t be a brutal one. Those of you not taking that challenge will find a lovely day on the river with just the right amount of wind for just about everyone at some point today. A windier day tomorrow (Monday) gives way to lesser wind on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thinking about next weekend? Ensembles like the idea of a big day on Saturday and are relatively certain there will be “enough” wind on Friday and Sunday to get you on the river.

Let’s look at today, Sunday, shall we? It’s a fun one! The cooldown has started. Early pressures were 30.04/29.92/29.92 for gradients of 0.12 and 0.00. Normally that would indicate you should stay near Hood River, but not necessarily today. There’s a system moving into BC, land of the Cheezies, and this will drive cooler air into the metro area late today. At the same time, the desert will head for the triple digits. This sets us up for a surprise evening session out east. For the morning, you’ll find 20-23 from Viento to Mosier with Stevenson joining in late morning. From Lyle to Doug’s, expect 12-15 this morning. Early in the afternoon, you’ll see the wind rise to 22-25 from Mosier to Doug’s and dip to 13-16ish from Stevenson to Hood River. But wait… there’s more… the evening session is the one to watch. This weather system well to the north is probably going to result in the western Gorge staying in the teens. Head anywhere from Lyle to Arlington this evening for 25-28. If you head to the eastern Gorge, remember to grab some Indian food at Amayah’s (the cart just east of Biggs) on the way home. River flow yesterday was 112-201kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 87F.

A deep and long-lasting marine push is slated for Monday. According to the sounding model, those clouds are planning to stick around all day in Cascade Locks. The cooler air will push farther east than we’d like, but the long-lasting clouds should give us the temp gradient we need. Also worth noting: the operational GFS (our standard wind forecast model) is under calling the wind compared to the ECMWF ensembles. Why do we care? Because the wind is likely to overperform! Given the clouds, expect 13-16 from Stevenson (more at Viento, likely) to Hood River. Mosier to Threemile start at 22-25 with Mosier possibly stronger. Afternoon wind rises to 26-30 from Lyle to Arlington. Threemile joins late in the day. For areas west of Mosier, we’ll be waiting for the clouds to burn off. Standard operating procedure is about 90 minutes of very gusty, strong wind. So… once those clouds burn off, expect a brief period where the Viento to Hood River section matches the eastern Gorge in strength with very gusty mid to upper 20’s. High temp: 76F for Hood River.

Ridging builds inland on Tuesday, drives the temps up, scares off the marine clouds, and knocks the wind speeds down. Expect 14-17 from Viento to Hood river to start. Midday: 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River. Evening: 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River. High temp: 85F. Less wind is forecast on Wednesday. Ensembles hint at westerlies returning on Thursday and building into next weekend. That’s it for today. Have a fun one on the river!

He hopes to also teach bump classes in the afternoon on those days should the Hatch reopen.

This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is under a level 3 evacuation order. That probably means Gunsight is closed at this time. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! Logging is happening on Hospital Hill. This means you cannot make a full circle – there is no connection between the front side and back side. You could ride Bad Wolf and Millennium as a loop. You can ride Roll Baby Roll and Triple Bypass as a loop. You cannot access Treehugger/Crazy Fingers at this time. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas
