Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Once again, we have a “not much” day in the Gorge. Thankfully, there’s lots of other things to do: dock starting, floating around on an inflatable unicorn, water skiing, mountain biking (the dirt is great in Post right now), road biking, gravel biking, go to a solstice party… We should see westerlies return to the “enough” level late Friday and stick around through the weekend.
Thursday opens with pressures of 29.95/29.97/29.99 for gradients in the of E 0.02 and E 0.02. That’s not enough to do much of anything wind-wise. Easterlies pick up to 10-15 near Stevenson for a few hours before the wind turns calm again this afternoon. Thanks to a very small thermal gradient and a little nudge from offshore high pressure, westerlies pick up to 10-13 from Stevenson to Swell and 7-10 from Hood River to Rufus late in the day, after 5pm, when it’s 90 degrees. River flow over the last 24 hours was 141-221kcfs, river temp is 62.06F, and high temp forecast is 88F.
Friday looks a wee bit windier as the hottest weather shifts east of the Cascades and the desert maximizes its gains. The day opens with 10mph at Stevenson and calm wind elsewhere. We’ll see a slow build into the early afternoon. At that point, we should have 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River. Evening wind holds at 14-17 at Swell after a brief spurt to 17-20. Other locations between Stevenson and Doug’s get 17-20 from late afternoon into the evening. High temp: 91F.

A weak system approaches on Saturday. This will affect where you find the strongest wind. That said, we’ll have wind all over the place! Opening salvo is 18-21 from Stevenson to Hood River with 7-10 to the east. By late morning: 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier. The wind then drops to 15-18 at Swell and rises to 22-25 everywhere else from Stevenson to Avery. As desert heating outpaces the metro area by 10 degrees, westerlies rise to 26-29 from Mosier to Arlington with 17-20 at Swell and 20-23 at Stevenson and Viento. High temp: 88F.

Extended: a solid marine push is forecast for Sunday as a system moves through. Timing and the marine layer’s decision to stick around / not stick around will be everything. As of this morning, models suggest a nuking dawn patrol at Swell followed by a shift of the strongest wind to the east. This forecast is likely to change several times as we get closer to Sunday. That said, it looks windy. Model spread increases on Monday. For now, let’s just call it “windy” and leave it there. Same for the rest of next week. Let’s see what those models say tomorrow. Stay cool today!
