Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

This morning’s weather is running about 6-8 hours behind the models; the expectation was rain last night and a switch to snow by dawn today. Temps are slowly dropping on the mountain, but we’ll see a bit of the “r-word” before that happens. After Saturday morning, temps drop enough for snow. Light snowfall continues over the next couple of days before a sunny break in the weather for Tuesday. Saturday swings the tail end of the pineapple express cold front over Mt. Hood in the morning. Behind this, temps drop and snow falls. The snow level will be 6500′ early. It’ll fall to 4000′ by midday and 2500′ overnight. About 0.5” water value (WV) falls during the day, half as rain, half as snow. Call it 1-3” of wet new snow. Another 0.3” WV falls overnight, for 2-4” of additional accumulation. Wind above tree line will be SW 60 early, SW 40 in the afternoon. Call it 50% of that below tree line. Overnight, the wind will turn light and variable.

Light snow continues on Sunday as a low pressure system slides through eastern Oregon. The snow level will be 2500′ during the day and 1500′ overnight. About 0.2” WV arrives during the day, for 2”-3” of new. Another 0.1” WV falls overnight for another inch of snow. Wind will be light and variable early, NW 15-20 int eh afternoon, and W 20 overnight.

Flurries continues on Monday. The snow level will be 1500-2000′, with the freezing level dropping down to the surface near Mt. Hood overnight. Just 0.1” WV will be available, for up to 1” of new snow. Wind will be W 20 early, SW 10 in the afternoon, and S 10 overnight.

Tuesday looks dry, clear, and colder as chilly air moves in from the east. The free air freezing level will be 0-1000′, depending on location. Light snowfall moves in on Tuesday night, maybe, for an inch of new by Xmas morning. Models are not in agreement on whether we’ll actually see that snow, or whether we’ll see continued snow on Xmas day. After that – more model disagreement.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light westerlies on Saturday morning slowly pick up to W 10-13 through the whole Gorge late this afternoon. Sunday starts with light west wind and holds. After sunset, the wind may pick up to W 12-15. Monday starts with W 8-11 everywhere. By afternoon, the wind turns around to E 10-15.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Light west wind. 2% chance of rainbows. Monday will be cloudy with scattered sprinkles. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 40’s later. West wind early. East wind in the afternoon. 2% chance of rainbows.   Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Looking for more humor in your weather? Obscenities? Road and Mountain Biking

All the rain over the last day has put all the trails in “too muddy to ride” zone. Please, please don’t, or you’ll do permanent damage. Especially vulnerable are those trails that were frozen when the rain arrived; the soil structure is all blown apart, and the tread will be fragile. If you ride it, you will gouge deep ruts that may never recover. Lots of other fun things to do today!

Upcoming Events

Today is the Nordic Kickoff Party at Mt. Hood Meadows with a 5k race. It’s also the summer solstice, with a free solstice celebration at TreeSong Nature Awareness and Retreat Center in Washougal. You can volunteer at the Rebuild-it Center tomorrow from 9 to 1pm.
