If you have a nice warm wetsuit and a snuggie to wear while rigging, you’re going to love today. We started off with 5am gradients (cat sat on my face and woke me up) of .11 (pdx-dls), .07 (dls-psc) and .38 (eph-dls). That’s less than models predict, but still plenty for a windy day on the river, especially as the sun warms the desert. Expect 20-23 early from Swell to Doug’s, with Maryhill quickly joining. By midday, we’ll have 28-32 from, well… wait one sec… Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
As I wrote this forecast, the marine clouds were past Hood River. That’s going to make Swell (and the Viento to HR downwind run) a tricky call today. I suspect the wind will blow from Viento to HR, but it’ll be up-and-down. Call it 23-26 with stronger periods all day. East of Hood River, all the way to Arlington, expect 28-32 from midday on with the most reliable wind at the Rowena/Doug’s stretch. There is a weather system approaching during the afternoon, and that could knock the wind down near Swell and Rufus.
Tomorrow starts with light west wind. As a weather system moves in during the afternoon, we’ll see the wind pick up to 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Expect 5-10 on Monday morning with 10-13 Monday afternoon. Tuesday, from this many days out, looks like 21-24.

Random Morning Thoughts
I was all ready to write something thoughtful this morning, and then I realized I need to do a little PSA. First, thank you to all of my subscribers. It’s come to my attention that some of you have not been receiving the emails regularly. It appears that Gmail is starting to reject a few random messages each day, considering them spam.
In other words, I need to find a different way to run this mailing list, likely using Mailchimp or Constant Contact. That’s going to take me a bit of time to switch over. So, my apologies if this Gmail issue is affecting you (and if it is, you may not be getting this message, which is why I’ve cross-posted it on the website). I should have this figured out within a couple of weeks.
In the meantime, I do my best to get the forecast out by 8:30 each morning. If it’s not in your inbox by then, please check the website. Again, my apologies for the inconvenience. It’s quite upsetting to me to have promised you an email and to have technical difficulties interfering with the fulfillment of that promise. I hope to have this resolved soon. Have an awesome day.
Gorge Weather Forecast
For the first time in a long time, I was up early enough that it was too dark to see the weather from my desk. I walked outside, and immediately wished I’d worn a down jacket. Brrr! It’s partly cloudy out there and cool: temps will be in the low 50’s early and the low 70’s this afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows.
Tomorrow looks partly cloudy with a slight chance of showers in the morning. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and upper 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 3% chance of rainbows. Monday looks sunny. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking
We had a few sprinkles last night, but I don’t think that’ll be enough to make the trails different from yesterday. That means Post is a mix of tacky and dry, and the 44 Road still hasn’t come around to fall riding quality. You know what is good right now? The Gorge 400. It’s tacky and fun!
In road biking news, you can expect a LOT of wind today. Tomorrow looks better, with light wind early and moderate wind late in the day. Tomorrow is the Dirty Sellwood ride out of Dirty Fingers: 117 miles, 35 gravel, 12,000′ of climbing. Nice. Good luck, riders.
