The Forecast

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

When I checked this morning, Timberline had picked up a few inches of snow overnight. Skibowl’s webcams show an inch or two at the base. The Top of Blue cam at Meadows shows a delightful covering of snow. While there’s no place to see the snow at Teacup (a new groomer, a new driver, and new prices this year), there must be snow there too! Snow continues to accumulate this week with a short period of rain possible Monday night depending on the path of an incoming low.

For Saturday, we’ve got snow in the morning, clear sky midday, and snow overnight. The snow level will be 2500′-3000′ in the morning and will fall to 2000′ overnight. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast this morning for 3” of decent-quality snow. Another 0.4” WE is on tap tonight. That’s 4-5” powder, thanks to the colder air. Wind will be SW 25-40 this morning, WSW 30-40 this afternoon, and WSW 25-30 overnight.

Sunday starts with orographic (terrain-enhanced) snowfall, turns clear in the afternoon, and ends up snowy overnight. The snow level will be 2000′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ overnight. 0.2” WE is forecast in the morning for a couple inches of snow. Another 0.4” WE is forecast overnight. That’s 4-5” powder. Wind: WSW 25-30 in the morning becoming SW 20-45 in the afternoon. The wind drops to SW 15-30 in the evening and turns to WSW 15-20 overnight.

Models are far from agreeing about the track of an incoming low on Friday night. This will affect both snow amounts and precipitation type. We do know the daytime will be dry. The current run of the operational GFS has about 1.0” WE overnight with 850mb temps at +3C when the precip arrives, 0C in the evening, and -2C overnight. That’s probably going to be a mix of snow, snain, and perhaps freezing rain. Let’s call it 6” fresh snow for that 1.0” WE. Wind will be WSW 15-20 in the morning, and ESE 25 in the afternoon. Depending on what this incoming low does, we could see wind as strong as WSW 50-75 overnight. The current GFS operational suggests the snow level will stay around 3000′ on Tuesday with 7-9” snow. Fingers crossed!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light easterlies this morning (Saturday!) turn around as a cold front swings through. After 11am or so, we’ll have gusty 14-17 in the western Gorge (with rain after 2pm) and gusty 24-27 east of The Dalles. The wind drops after 2pm. River flow is 88,700cfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 50F. Sunday starts with 10-13 west of Swell and east of The Dalles with calm wind in the central Gorge. The wind picks up to 14-17 in the eastern Gorge with heavy rain in the west in the afternoon. Monday starts with easterlies at 10-15 near Cascade Locks. The wind builds to E 30-35 at Rooster Rock and 15-20 at Cascade Locks with 10-15 east of Hood River. The day will be dry. High temp: 47.
