Saturday. Wind and snow.

Gorge Wind Forecast

There’s not much wind happening out there this morning (I feel like a broken record!), but the wind will pick up this afternoon. I should mention that today’s setup isn’t ideal for Gorge wind. Although we do have high pressure off the coast, a positive, inland low pressure and cold air aloft is creating instability above us. That will lead to gusty and unreliable wind, especially if thunderstorms kick off this afternoon.

All that said, we’ll see a slow build in the westerlies today. The western Gorge, under the clouds, will likely see gusty 12-15. East of Mosier, we should see 13-16 by noon and gusty 20-23 after 2pm, with the wind filling in all the way to Roosevelt. River flow is 458kcfs at The Dalles, way, way too high for the Maryhill stretch, and river temp is 52 degrees. 1284 Chinook made it past Bonneville Dam yesterday. (continued below the chart)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.

Looking at Sunday, the wind should be a little bit steadier as a weak ridge of high pressure builds over the northwest in the afternoon. We’ll start the day with very light west wind. By 11am, we’ll see 12-15 through the entire Gorge. The wind should pick up to 15-18 in the afternoon from Rowena to Arlington, perhaps from Mosier to Arlington. Clouds in the western Gorge near Stevenson will keep the wind there lighter and wetter.

Looking at Monday, we’ll have weak high pressure over the region in the morning and an approaching weather system in the afternoon. Although that weather system will bump the wind into the 15-18 range after 1pm or so, it’ll be gusty and unreliable. Models are hinting at a big west wind day on Wednesday, but let’s not hold our breath yet.

Jones, Sauvie’s, Coast Beta Test Forecast

No wind to speak of at Jones or Sauvie’s through Monday. The Coast will only see northerlies on Sunday: light at the north coast, 10-15 central, 25-30 south. NW swell 7′ at 9 seconds.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Looks like we’ll see snow at 5000′ this week. For today, the snow level will be 2500′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ after midnight. We’ll see 2-4” of snow during the day and 4-7” overnight. Wind Saturday will be W 20. Sunday also looks snowy. The snow level will be 3000′ early, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ after midnight. We’ll see 1-2” during the day, and another 1-2” overnight. Wind will be W 20 for much of the day and WSW 10 after midnight.

Monday looks partly cloudy during the day and snowy after 5pm. The snow level will be 3000′ in the morning and 4000′ in the afternoon and evening. Models show an impressive 1” water value overnight, for 8-11” of new snow. Whoa. Let’s see if that really pans out. Wind Monday will be WSW 10 early, 25 in the afternoon, and W 25 after midnight. The GFS model currently shows another 1” WV or more during the day Tuesday, for another 8-11” of snow. Let’s wait and see before we get all excited, k?

Random Morning Thoughts

I had a really crazy dream last night about a professor undermining me and my supervisee cuddling with one of her clients in session (these things didn’t happen in real life!!). I woke up exhausted and drained and frustrated and feeling helpless in the face of the world. It’s amazing what a dream can do to our mental state, eh?

Anyway, dreams can do this and waking situations can too. It’s important to be able to recover from an emotional beatdown. One thing we can do in the midst of a bunch of unpleasant emotions is a soothing reality check. We can look around and find things that contradict our current state and focus on those things. We can do some self-talk, for example, “I’m safe, I’m part of a community, my world is bigger than this one unpleasant thing…” That kind of talk.

But here’s the key: it’s important to focus solely on those messages for a few minutes. A multi-tasking, half-assed attempt at self-soothing isn’t going to work. Your nervous system won’t buy in if you’re scattered. So take a few minutes after a bad dream or an unpleasant interaction and bring back a little bit of pleasantness to your world. That’ll make the rest of your day easier. Have an awesome day.
