Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Sometimes Mother Nature comes up with an extra special long spell of west wind. Welcome to one. It’s been windy for the last week, and the moderate to strong westerlies will continue for the next week.

For Saturday, 1028mb offshore high pressure combines with a heat low in the desert and highs near 90 out there for another windy day on the river. A midday lull is likely due to heating in Portland, where clouds will burn off. So… early morning westerlies at 10-13 near Stevenson, 15-28 Viento to Mosier, and variable in the far east. The wind will quickly build to 24-27 from Stevenson to Avery. Watch for a mid-afternoon lull near Swell, Mosier and Hood River. Other locations should hold. Arlington maxes out at 10-13 today. Rufus is the wild card… probably 15-18 this afternoon.

Sunday looks very interesting. Sunday morning looks just like Saturday. In the afternoon, a trough of low pressure and cooler air drops down from BC. This is a setup that can bring surprisingly strong late day west wind to the Corridor. So, the day starts with 14-17 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 near Stevenson. Midday westerlies rise to 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 5-10 out east. Early evening has the potential for major excitement on the river – models suggest 26-30 from Stevenson to Avery with 24-27 in the eastern Gorge. Gut instinct, not always correct, says the evening session could end up in the “nuclear” range near Swell.

On to Monday… gradients continue in the “giant” range as cooler air and deeper marine clouds in the west combine with sunshine and a heat low in the east. Forecast: 26-29 from Stevenson to Arlington. WIND EMERGENCY! Looking at the rest of the week, the GFS and ECMWF agree on moderate to strong westerlies every single day. Unseasonably cool temps may affect your comfort level midweek, but the wind will still be around.

Road and Mountain Biking

If you’re looking for Brown Pow, you’ll find it all over the place. Post is good. Knebal, 8-Mile, Bottle Prairie and Surveyor’s are “open with patches of snow”, according to 44 Trails Association. Logging has begun on Whoopdee, so the main loop is closed. Ronnoc trail will remain open, and so will the climb out. Other open trails: Post, Nestor, Columbia Hills, Hospital Hill, Dog River, Sandy Ridge, Syncline, and Falls Creek from the top. Lower Lewis River is open.

If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new designated parking area. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
