Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Another day of easterlies is on tap today (Saturday), but you’ll want to move quickly. It’ll fade faster than it did yesterday. We’ll switch to light, but probably “not enough” westerlies on Sunday. Monday bring rain along with very gusty westerlies focused east of The Dalles. Best chance for something better this week looks like Wednesday. Fingers crossed, although I work that day.

Saturday starts off as clear as it gets with solid gradients and strong easterlies, at least at Iwash (Rooster) Rock. Pressures at 6am were 29.93/30.09/30.01 for gradients of E0.16 and 0.01. Easterlies start at 35-40 near Iwash, 25ish near Stevenson, and 20 near Viento. Get on it. By late morning, the wind drops to 25-30 at Iwash, 20-25 at Stevenson, and 15-20 at Viento. The steady fade continues through the afternoon. Stevenson and Viento end at 10mph or so, and Iwash finishes the day at 10-15. River flow yesterday was 65-101kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is 79F

Saturday starts off nearly identical to Friday: 20-25 at Iwash, 20-25 at Stevenson, 15-20 at Viento. Okay, slightly less wind than Friday, but still windy enough. It will die off faster. Early afternoon: 15-20 from Iwash to Stevenson with 10-15 at Viento. Evening: 15 from Iwash to Stevenson. High temp: 80 or so. Plenty warm for less wetsuit than this past week!

Sunday starts off dead calm or nearly so. Models think we’ll see westerlies at 10-13 for a few hours from Stevenson to Viento before the wind fades down to less than 10mph. High temp: 80F. Monday starts with light westerlies. Rain quickly arrives. When that weather system pushes through, it’ll trigger gusty westerlies at 18-22 from Avery to Boardman. Timing? Probably early afternoon. High temp: 65F. Models call for widespread easterlies at 10-15ish on Tuesday followed by a shot at mid-20’s westerlies east of The Dalles in the afternoon. After that? Back to east wind, probably strong easterlies. Have a lovely 80 degree easterly day today!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

The HRATS shuttle fundraiser is 10/7 in Post Canyon. It’s by donation, but they’d love if you donate $45 for a full day of shuttles. Sign-up starts at 8:30am bottom of Post (end of pavement). Shuttles start at 9am and end at 2pm.

Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Paddle folks (OC/Surfski) meet at the Hatch Thursday evenings for laps. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.

Regular bike rides (thanks to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards for collecting). Tuesday is Mountain View’s ride. Meet at 5:45pm on Post Canyon Drive where the pavement ends. Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

Post Canyon alert: this Saturday, 10/7, is the HRATS fundraiser shuttle day. Lots of perfect dirt out there right now – don’t ride in mud or you’ll do permanent damage. Speaking of mud, today’s forecast contains enough rain to turn Post (and maybe some other trails) into muddy messes. Hesitate before riding on Tuesday. Trails on private land that were previously closed due to fire danger (Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee) have reopened. No trails have closed yet due to snow. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
