Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies are forecast for the next three days. After that, we head into another vicious 100+ degree heat wave. That will shut the wind down in the Gorge, at the Coast, and even at Jones and Sauvie’s for a three to four day period. So, get it while you can!

Looking at Saturday, we have a weak front approaching from offshore. That’s going to result in gusty wind and directional problems today, much like yesterday. Early westerlies will be 14-18 from Viento to Hood River, perhaps Mosier, with 7-10 to the east and west. The wind basically holds through mid-morning. Early afternoon brings an increase to 19-23 between Hood River (maybe Mosier) and Avery with 12-15 to the west, 15-18 at Rufus, and 10-13 at Arlington. When that front pushes onshore mid-afternoon, the wind builds to gusty 24-28 from Mosier to Rufus with 19-23 east to Threemile and 12-15 or less west of Mosier. River flow is 120kcfs, river temp is 71F, and high temp forecast is a muggy 80F.

That cold front swings through tonight. Clouds pour into the western Gorge. Morning westerlies will be 22-25 from Mosier to Threemile with gusty 12-16 between Viento and Hood River. Stevenson starts at 0-10. There may be a brief bump to gusty 19-23 from Swell to Hood River late morning, but it’s more likely that the Corridor, cloudy until early afternoon, will stay light. Get it if it happens! Otherwise, afternoon wind will be 24-27 from Mosier to Rufus with 12-15 in the western Gorge and 14-17 at Arlington. High temp: 74F.

High pressure builds inland on Monday and crushes the gradients. We may have some light lingering westerlies: 8-11 from Stevenson to Swell or maybe Hood River. Late in the day, the wind is forecast to pick up just a bit, perhaps to 11-14 between Stevenson and Hood River. High temp: 84F. Tuesday starts with 10-13 and fades. Wednesday and Thursday: light and variable. Stay cool!

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users. DNR land in Eastern Washington (Buck Creek / Nestor Peak) is all closed to recreation due to fire danger.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Gunsight, Underhill. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed” due to wildfire last year.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
