Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Well, reality certainly beat the models yesterday! Hopefully that tired you out, because we have a rest day on tap today. Westerlies return for Sunday and Monday, and then we switch to easterlies on Tuesday. While there are some hints of a stronger west wind day on Wednesday, there’s also a ton of uncertainty in the overall weather pattern for the middle of next week. So… don’t trust the forecast beyond Tuesday, at least for now!

Saturday’s an easy one. We start with a few scattered low clouds over the metro area and pressures of 30.18/30.16/30.18. Not much gradient, in other words. Wind match: light and variable all through the Gorge. Models suggest we’ll see a few hours of east wind at 10mph near Stevenson and Viento mid-morning before a return to calm conditions. River low over the last 24 hours was 90-113kcfs (although I’m using a backup source, and that feels off!), river temp is 67.10F, and high temp forecast is 77F.

Sunday brings a weak weather system our way, but that system will wait until the night to zip through the area. As it approaches, it helps the west side stay cooler than the east side. Westerlies return. Expect calm conditions to start. By mid-morning, we should have 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River. Afternoon wind rises to gusty 19-22 from Stevenson to Avery with 14-17 at Rufus. Wait a little longer, and you may find gusty 22-25 from Lyle to Rufus with the wind holding at other locations. High temp: 78F and increasingly muggy.

Writing the complete forecast takes me 1-2 hours a day. If it saves you time, gas money, or helps you plan your life, please consider contributing.

Weak riding on Monday is probably going to push the wind below usable levels. It appears the day will start with 10-13 from Viento to Hood River. There might be a short period of upper teens in the afternoon, but models disagree on whether or not that will happen. Plan on “not”. Be surprised and happy if we do see enough wind.

Extended: on Tuesday, the wind switches direction. It doesn’t look like a big east wind day: averages might be around 20mph for a few hours. Beyond Tuesday, 50% of the ensembles take us in a more active direction, and 50% take us into a warmer/drier, potentially easterly direction. So, no forecast beyond Tuesday will provide you with any useful info at this time. We’ll leave it there for now. Have a great day today!

Cycling

All vehicles on HR County forest roads need a gallon of water and a shovel. Check the Hood River County Foresty/Trails website for current Post Canyon area closures. Fire or fire danger closures: Gorge 400 and trails around Mt. Adams. Underwood and Hospital Hill have reopened. Open: 44 Road Trails, Ape Canyon, Lewis River, Falls Creek, Columbia Hills, Gunsight, Boulder Lakes, Siouxon, Sandy Ridge. Twin Tunnels reopened for a day or two, and then it closed again – I have photo evidence to prove this! Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
