Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! As you know by looking at the sky, we’re dealing with some “weather” in today’s picture. This makes today’s forecast tricky. After today, a series of unseasonably strong low pressure systems rotate off the coast. That’s good news for rain, but bad news for wind. But hey, it might allow this forecaster to take a few days off!

Saturday starts with pressures of 29.96/29.93/29.94 for gradients of 0.03 and E0.01. As a front approaches, we should see some gusty westerlies. You’ll probably have to head east of Mosier to get some today; models suggest areas to the west will stay under 10mph. That said, sometimes frontal systems will bring an hour or two of unexpected wind in the Corridor. By late morning, we’ll have 13-16 from Lyle to Avery with 18-22 from Avery to Arlington. There’s a slight chance of slightly stronger wind between Lyle and Threemile this afternoon, but the ensembles are not optimistic. Maybe 22-25, but I’m not making any promises, and honestly, I’d be surprised to see it. River flow yesterday was 55-97kcfs, river temp is 67F, and high temp forecast is 69F.

Sunday starts calm, picks up to E10-15 from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Cascade Locks, and falls to calm or light easterly in the afternoon. High temp: 63F. Monday starts with widespread, short-lived easterlies at 10-15mph. As a system swings through, the western Gorge goes calm and moderately strong SOUTH wind picks up east of The Dalles. High temp: 65F. Models have some hope for westerlies on Tuesday and Wednesday, but this pattern is way too active to pin down a forecast yet. That’s all for today. Have a good day out there whatever you do!

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
